Daily News Thai Caption: Eliminating illegal weapons

Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat told the Thai media at the weekend that serious violent crime of a brazen nature often using guns is on the rise in Thailand.

The proliferation of weapons is attracting the attention of the man known in the media as Big Den (the notable one).

Big Den is especially worried about how easy it is to buy weapons online and in his capacity as chief of the PCT - Police Cyber Taskforce - he ordered a crime crackdown from 24th to 31st August.

The man who will take up the position of RTP chief at the end of this month replacing outgoing chief Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk, pointed to brazen and violent events at an Ubon Ratchathani restaurant and shootings among young people as well as armed robbery to back up his claims that Thailand is getting more violent.

In the crackdown 422 guns were seized and more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition and hundreds of arrests were made of dealers and people opening illegal accounts to receive money.

In addition more and 6,000 Ya Ba pils were seized and 400 grams of "ice" (crystal meth), reported Daily News

He urged the Thai public to help the RTP by calling 1441 (the PCT number) to report online tech crime.

How about the idea that the Thai police enforces laws and arrests the bad guys? Or would that be too radical and somehow inconvenient?

We all know who the real criminals are.  They wear brown uniforms.

If you want to know the time  If you want to buy a gun ask a policeman

Would it not be better to have a crackdown on crime every day.? Like Police forces in other countries have. How about patrolling officers on foot and car actively looking for crime.

Well, as the US amply demonstrates law enforcement is not everything, but it is something. A deterrent is a powerful thing. Not much of one here, as the police rarely do their jobs properly, are motivated by all wrong things, and nobody is afraid of them. Also the judicial system is bent, and seems to be entirely dependent on how much money one has.

What about the rest of the year?

One week of law enforcement. Kind of a healthy change of pace. Then 51 weeks of working the franchise.

If the government would train, pay and give the police the proper tools, it may help a lot. Now they get pittance for pay so take bribes. If they want a gun they have to purchase one and they, not all, have to ride on their <deleted>ty motorbikes. They need to step it up like most other countries if you ever expect any change.

Which countries are you referring to? Cant be America, where gun grime was/is an hourly occurrence.

Can't be the UK where gun and knife crime is a daily accordance and rising. While the police send 6 officers to arrest a pensioner for sharing a post on FB. Only the other day it was reported 100 plus youths/men fighting ,using Machetes and knifes, in the streets of London. In Liverpool a 9 year old girl shoot to death in her own home. Really cracking down .

The country was closed for two years decimating peoples livelihoods. Increase in crime was always inevitable

Oh, that's next.

If Thailand doesn't stop the proliferation of guns now, they will soon end up like the USA; a shooting every day in every city at the least and no end in sight.

Yet

Yet billions upon billions spent on useless equipment for the Military. And unnamed ones stand by, condoning all that Pray-hoot has done.

Some years ago I was present when a  friend (who is fluent in Thai) was stopped driving his car, after a short conversation the cop went to his vehicle and brought back a pistol my friend handed him 3k THB.

Apparently the RTP were engaged in a road block looking for illegal weapons!

Allowing for suicides, US gun deaths - murders, etc - is about 25k a year. About the same as Thai roads - which would mean - because of its size and population - you are more likely to die on a thai road than a US gun death. I find that amazing

Why just a one week crackdown... the PCT should be scanning the cyber world 24/7 to rid the internet of crime related activities?

While the PCT sit idle and ask the public to do the work?

And his own organisation is one of the major facilitators in the the illegal business of firearms but of course the usual navel gazing statements will continue with little real action taken along with the lack of action generally from the BiB as they don't really want interruptions to their business activities.
