BANGKOK, Sept 9 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) raised its flood alert as the levels of canals in the upper part of the capital were high amid the possibility of prolonged downpours.

Heavy rain over the past three days caused flooding in many areas of Bangkok. Torrential downpours started yesterday afternoon and raised the levels of local canals. Among them were Prem Prachakorn and Lat Phrao canals where water propellers were installed to accelerate discharges into the Chao Phraya River.

Deputy Bangkok governor Wiissanu Sapsompol said the City Hall had dredged waterways and cleaned sewers in its efforts to prevent flooding but it was difficult to predict the exact localities where heavy rain would happen.

Every year they come out with warnings such as these yet they do nothing to increase the efficiency of the drainage systems. Of course we know that Bangkok is below sea level but so are many parts of the Netherlands yet they don't have the same problems. Maybe it is time for the people in charge to get experts from the Netherlands over to assess the situation and make recommendations. Of course this would be useless unless the recommendations are acted upon.

Actually there has been positive change over the years here in Bangkok - in the late 1900's you could spend weeks flooded in many areas of the city, with only Thai Army trucks for transportation - today that just does not happen.  Yes more work is needed but there have been major improvements.

Doesn't matter where it falls it tends to find the lowest level and from there run downhill...
