DIY bubble bucket cloning.

For those of you that want many western hybrids at almost ZERO cost. 

You need

1. bucket with a lid (https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i3877968807-s14851835737.html) 150bht (this one includes net pots)

2. aquarium air pump + air stones (https://www.lazada.co.th/products/magic-8800-set-2-magic-8800-air-pump-set-i224945627-s343749738.html) 150bht

3. net pots and collars (https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i3399576160-s12566860900.html) 90bht

4. a 'mother' plant

 

Fill your bucket with tap water (you can adjust PH6.0 and add small amounts of nutes, calmag if you want)

You want the water to touch the bottom of the net pot, (cut any ribs off the bottom of the net pot for ease of removing rooted cuttings) and the bottom of the cutting to be just above the water line.

 

My net pots didn't come with collars, so I cut some bits of foam to hold the cuttings.

(Note: don't make the collars so tight they pinch the plant stems)

 

Fit it all together, check the bubbler is making bubbles to cover the water surface.

 

Put your cuttings in the collars, and then in the net pots (trim off excess leaf). 

Place the whole thing in the daylight (but not in direct sunlight) 

 

Wait 5-10 days while it bubbles away, until you feel the roots are dense enough.

Transplant into pots and potting soil, not in strong sun for at least a week until new leaves are growing.

 

My 6 cutting bucket has produced 5 rooted clones in the last 5-8 days.

 

When 1 clone is rooted, I just take a new cutting.

Way easier than growing from seed, the bucket just needs topping up with a glass of water every 4-5 days.

 

The theory: water bubbles splash the stem of the cutting causing it to grow roots. 

Warning: your cuttings will go completely limp for the first few hours, but will recover into firm upright plants within 12hrs.

Note: the trimmed leaves will die and fall off as the plant roots.

I currently have Bubblegummer, Tropical Punch and will soon have Cheesilicious. 

I have no interest in Thai plants as I already have too many grown from cheap Thai seeds.

Am I correct in thinking this is a foam ice box, that you've converted?
Do you use only cuttings from a female plant?

Nah, bought this box from Lazada for 180bht, too lazy to cut my own holes

If you make your own, the polystyrene needs to be lined with a bin bag for extra strength.

 

These cutting are from veg plants grown with female seeds, obviously you can take cuttings from any 'green stem' plant. If it's a MJ plant in flower it will take longer to root and look a bit odd for a few weeks, crowns also take longer to root. Usually the cuttings from a MJ plant in veg will take 5-10 days to root.

 

I bought 2 bigger airstones for this box, same pump, 120bht each.

is much simpler, with good results, 10 out of 12. My first time.

From cuttings to transplanting in 2 weeks+, outdoors on my porch. Hand watering with a syringe for 3 days, watering can

for 4 days and back to syringe with 10% of my nute's for 4 days.

Then full strength nute's, no real transplanting shock.

I see you cut the tips of the leaves off. Is this normal practice? Does it improve the rooting process please?

Shortening or removing leaves reduces evaporation and water loss from the cuttings. 
Roots are more likely to form if light is excluded from the stem. 
Partially scraping the skin off the stem may encourage rooting, as does hormone powder or gel (though honey or jamming the stem into a potato briefly is alleged to be effective too).

Got one of these yesterday, but thought that 24 litres of water was a bit much for only 8 cuttings.

Simple solution.

On your advice, I bought the box and air pump. Box is OK, but the pump is SOO noisy, a loud buzz constantly. No good if you had it for an aquarium in your living room.

great post BritManToo.  I have followed it and my clone bucket is bubbling away happily.  easy to check pH and add a touch of nutrients.  very clean and hassle free way of taking cuttings.  fingers crossed i get some healthy roots showing soon.  Thanks for the share mate ????

Some decent roots on this one (Cheeselicious), been a bit lazy the last week.

The clones are rooting faster than I can pot them!

This is my meager effort. Bought the pump and air stone from Lazada for 100 Baht inc delivery. It's very quiet, the bubbles make far more noise than the pump. Also it's a USB as I will use outside and don't want to have to deal with mains electrical wires and rain. At 1 watt, the 20,000 mAh power pack should run it for a couple of days. 

 

I cut the holes with a soldering iron but have since found a spark plug remover hex socket heated up with a blow torch is much easier.

 

I'm using it to start some lettuce ATM. I will look into trying to spread the bubbles out further.
