The "etc" Virus

Featured Replies

in "my documents", there is a "Etc" folder. I delete it, but it keeps coming back. It takes on the date of one of my other folders in which I store all my company documents.

Strange.

Anyone seen this before / know remedy ?

I don't know the answer , but it might not be a "virus" that's creating it.

Is there ever anything in it to give a clue as to it's origin ?

So much Windows software creates directories and files on an "as needed" basis that it could be coming from something "legitimate".

Maybe keep an eye on it and note the last program you used before it reappeared ?

I can't find anything known to do this but you should still do a full system scan to be sure. What antivirus program do you use?

the etc folder should be in the system32/drivers/ folder

it holds the HOSTS file
