According to Skyscanner (that has options to look at recent flights UK to BKK)

Approx 35k one way direct.

Sounds very expensive.

"Approx 35k one way direct." For economy??

The 35k was economy.

I wouldn't know Business class.

Flying to from Melbourne, Oz it's a 9 hour direct flight.

Just checked my current flight coming up.

7,500baht return direct.

One thing the Oz folk have over the UK and even moreso USA guys.

Flights so easy with low cost airline such as Jetstar.

Edit: the above fare is book when airline has their Sales.

For folk not retired I imagine the travel dates are far more restrictive.

Are immigration lines at Suvarnabhumi Airport still really long, like before the pandemic?

Back then I would do this trick:

Befriend a Thai girl (or girls) on the plane. Walk and chat with her as you get off the plane. Immigration will assume that you're her husband and you can get into the express Thai lane too, or at least a really short one next to it!

I came in July (and left in October) and line was extremely short. I usually travel in JAL or ANA and never had long queue even in the Pre-covid days when Thailand was drawing 39 mil visitors a year. The only times I had to wait long in the queue was if my arrivals coincided with a few flights from China. Then it was a  real chaos at the immigration line.

while i'm sure there can occasionally be long queues in all the years i've flown to thailand, i've never had to queue an unreasonably long time, i've always arrived at the carousel before my luggage.

also never had any hassle, issue or complaint about an IO officer, always polite and professional.

I paid one way Sydney to Phuket around 7300;baht but nearly half of the cost of the ticket was baggage - I have combined check-in and cabin 54kg which is the maximum possible, including one oversize item.

Bringing that much with full service airline is only possible business class upwards and depending on the airline. For economy extra baggage can be prepaid, but price per kg is very high.

Otherwise IMO the cheapest full class to Australia is to use Qantas points - 25k points +  3150 baht tax one way BKK-SYD.
