House January 6 committee votes to subpoena Trump during Thursday’s hearing

Featured Replies

Capitol riot hearings: Eight key moments - BBC News

The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack voted to subpoena former President Donald Trump for documents and testimony during a public hearing Thursday.

The move is a significant escalation by the panel that will set up a showdown with the former President.

It is not expected that Trump will comply with the subpoena, but the action serves as a way for the committee to set down a marker and show that it wants information directly from Trump as the panel investigates the attack.

What you don't note is that Trump wanted the National Guard there to protect the demonstrators. Trump asked for troops to do 'whatever was necessary' to protect demonstrators who went on to storm

  • "Jan-6 is nothing,"   Only someone who puts Trump before country and democracy would post such contemptible words.

Nonsense.   The panel has a time table which must include the midterms.   A reminder perhaps that the rightwing have very clearly stated that if they win enough seats at the midter

Smart move.

Trump will almost certainly ignore/deride/contest the subpoena.

The message is clear, ‘nothing to hide, nothing to fear’.

If Mr Trump does not comply with the summons, known as a subpoena, he could face criminal charges and imprisonment.

The subpoena is expected to be issued in the coming days, and include a deadline for when Mr Trump must either comply or face punishment.

His former political strategist, Steve Bannon, also flouted a similar legal summons from the select committee to testify, and he was found guilty in July of criminal contempt of Congress.

To quote from the article;

"The vote took place at the end of Thursday’s hearing, as the panel made a case to the American public ahead of the midterm election that Trump lied about the outcome of the 2020 election and spurred on a violent mob of his supporters to attack the Capitol."

Seems obvious that the panel has political motivations, and that the timing of the subpoena is not a coincidence.  A classic "October surprise".

Hillary appearing for the Benghazi Hearings for 11 hours grilling should be an inspiration for Trump to appear to prove who wears the pants.

There’s your ‘political’ right under your nose.

And  the expected reply from Trump ????

"The Unselect Committee knowingly failed to examine the massive voter fraud which took place during the 2020 Presidential Election — The reason for what took place on January 6th," Trump posted on Truth Social.

Americans have had a belly-full of “democrats unhinged” and they’re beginning to realize that the Democrat party version of democracy is painful, mostly unconstitutional, and cares nothing about the people but only the chosen elite. So the J6 kangaroo court will roll on and, if I were a betting person, I would say that the January 6 committee will live to regret giving Donald Trump a chance to sit before them and explain what really happened.

An opinion by Mr. Conway-CNN

What’s next?

"Trump could decide to comply. The committee would then negotiate a time, place and method. That would take time.

If he refuses to comply with the subpoena, here’s what could happen:"

[Contempt, Referral or Prosecution]

"This sequence of events seems far-fetched for Trump.

“None of that is going to happen,” the Trump critic and conservative lawyer George Conway predicted during an appearance on CNN Thursday. “This is about laying a marker. This is about triggering a response (from Trump).”

Trump responded on social media, calling the committee a “BUST” and a “laughing stock” and accusing members of dividing the country."

The left has no chance of success against challenging anything Trump and MAGA. Their six years of failing to so illustrates it all, they seem to enjoy the humiliation and they should come to their senses if possible. Nothing is gained, and the people suffer needlessly.

Maybe you are right and he will make an appearance for the Jan 6 committee and plead the Fifth.

I think the right side of the law has wind behind their sails with staggering record of Trump's criminal and financial indictable crimes. The country can't reward those who plotted against the constitution and the voters.

There are quite a few MAGA wingnuts in prison right now, with Trump soon to follow.  So clearly, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Trump's response to Jan 6 Committee

Though he doesn't say he will appear or not.

In his 14-page response, he gets all of his old grievances off his chest for his apologists' sake.

I suggest that he has no need to attend now, as he knows that he would have no credibility while under oath, and it would only be the usual 440 iterations of him taking the 5th.

He states that the election was "rigged and stolen" even though at least three of his staff had witnessed him saying that he really had accepted that Biden had won the election.

I love his knock off POTUS letter head.

In particular if he is confronted with this testimony:

The President was fired up about the Supreme Court decision,” Hutchinson said. “The President said … something to the effect of, ‘I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing. Figure it out. We need to figure it out. I don’t want people to know that we lost.’”

If the one sided show trial against Trump, who was not allowed a defence(which is when the J6 committee lost any and all credibility) and morphed into yet another witch hunt against Trump left anybody still in doubt about the democrats all-consuming irrational hatred of Donald Trump, we have this evidence just in. Shocking and worrying in equal measures, violence is still bad, right? This woman needs help to work through her rage problem.

"I hope he comes," Pelosi responds. "I want to punch him out. This is my moment. I’ve been waiting for this. For trespassing on the Capitol grounds. I want to punch him out, and I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy."

I hope he does go. If he does IMO he'll either take the fifth on everything which will make it look silly, or he'll go in on the attack and turn the proceedings into a circus. I certainly hope it's the latter.

Very entertaining.

Either way, I suspect the committee will regret bringing him in.

A "one sided show" in which most witnesses are Republicans, and a large number of them have been appointed by Trump.

BTW, as already mentioned many times, it is not a trial.

He won't go (or will take the five) because he won't accept to testify under oath and be caught lying.

As a gentle reminder that Trump's choice for his defence was rejected(because Jordan absolutely shredded the false narrative on the hoax impeachment fiascos which was terminally embarrassing for the democrats and as we know resulted in 2 acquitalls and much egg on face for the democrat bigwigs)

"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vetoed two Republican nominees to the panel set to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Citing "statements and actions" made by the pair — Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio — Pelosi said she was rejecting their nominations "with respect for the integrity of the investigation."

"The unprecedented nature of January 6th demands this unprecedented decision," Pelosi said."

I think you will understand that the prosecution deciding who can act as defence for the accused is as banana republic an action as it gets.

Hypothetically- because the GOP has more integrity and sense that to do it, but I wonder if when it's Biden's turn to be prosecuted and the Republicans choose who can be Biden's defence team (I'd choose Tara Reid and Cornpop for the job - you can see that is not an ideal situation for Biden fans) try to understand how bonkers it is the left choosing who can defend Trump and how ridiculous this "committee" really is.

You are conflating investigation and prosecution.

Criminals don’t get to choose who investigates their crimes.

You would think from the way Nancy Pelosi reacted that Trump's incitement was putting her life and the life of others in danger. Fortunately, he proved her wrong by his prompt call for the National Guard to intervene. Also, to be fair, he claims he was at meetings the whole time this was going on and didn't know what was happening in the vicinity of the Capitol. And why should we distrust his claim even though there are multiple eyewitnesses that he was glued to the TV reporting on the situation? Nancy Pelosi was being so unfair!

It is not a trial and committee members are not selected as "defense". Jim Jordan has never hidden he wanted to disrupt the work of the committee. On top of it, he was a potential witness or suspect, so could not investigate himself.

Other reps could have replaced him but the GOP refused it. Just like they refused an independent investigation before that.

It's Pelosi who has the rage problem based on one incident? We have multiple reports from eyewitnesses about the ragings of Trump. And lots of torn-up documents subsequently taped together also support their contentions.

"Violence is still bad right?

Pelosi knows it is and her statements are only harmless rhetoric of a woman threatened with possible death by Trump's actions. At least Pelosi knows the difference between right and wrong and is willing to be accountable to the law for her actions.

Yet, Trump doesn't seem to think it is!

Trump is a serial offender of encouraging and threatening violence against race, religions, and reporters to political opponents and even friends and colleagues like Pence. He even personally instigated violence himself against Secret Service agent Tony Ornato by trying to throttle him.

Yet, your hero has never accepted any blame or accountability for his actions

Trumps response, sorry self incriminating rant to the subpoena:

“Charade and Witch Hunt.” Trump then urged Thompson and other committee members to examine the “massive Election Fraud” that Trump insists took place during the 2020 presidential election.

In closing, Trump lauded the “great American Patriots” who participated in the attack on the Capitol, and said that they “have had their lives ruined” by the committee.

He wants someone else to find election fraud because he can't (there wasn't any of significance) and he calls people who attacked the Capitol while Congress was in session confirming a legitimate election "patriots".

The man is a threat to democracy in the US, as is everyone who supports him.

IMO when he brought in that goon squad (Sidney Powell, Pillowman et al) I think he dangled a tempting carrot in front of them, maybe something like "whoever turns this around and keeps me in office gets a billion bucks" and thus ensued something on the level of the movie "It's a Mad Mad Mad World"  combined with "The Thick of It."

Powell is going to do some orange jumpsuit time for that crank call to the Pentagon about the CIA chief being kidnapped.

Oh, and rotsa ruck collecting that billion if they did succeed.

I implore AN posters to read trump's response in the Washington Examiner to see just what mental condition the former president has sunk to – – – good grief, just what will it take for trump's followers to accept that there is absolutely no evidence/nothing proven with regards to the election being rigged and/or stolen; AND this has been proven time and time again.

I think the former president is deranged, and this has been a steady downward trend for the last few years.

There is only one solution, and one which he would be very familiar with: – "lock him up".

Stop wasting time and put him behind bars
