BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan instructed state agencies to adopt a proactive approach to promote road safety and reduce accidents.

Members of the National Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Policy Board today convened in a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan to review the outcomes of the enforcement of the amended Land Transport Act, which includes additional punishments for traffic law violations.

The amended law, which came into effect on 5 September, aims to keep regulationห up to date with the current behaviors of motorists.

In regard to driving under the influence, first-time offenders will face up to a year in prison, plus a fine between 5,000 and 20,000 baht, while repeat offenses within a span of two years will result in up to 2 years of imprisonment, plus a fine of 50,000-100,000 baht, along with a minimum one year driver’s license suspension.

The policy board in the meeting acknowledged a resolution from the road safety administration center to make 21 January of every year Road Users’ Safety Day, in remembrance of a tragic incident on 21 January this year when a reckless motorcycle driver killed a pedestrian at a crosswalk in Bangkok.

The meeting also approved a road accident prevention and reduction plan for public holidays in 2023, particularly during the New Year and Songkran holidays, as well as a draft road safety master plan for 2022-2027.

Thailand has NO proactive enforcement.  That would require cops in patrol cars pulling people over for moving violations.  And my educated guess?  That ain't never happening.  I personally think they want chaos on the roads.  If they had cops issuing citations for moving violations then the wrong (rich and wealthy) folks may be inconvenienced.  You know, like weaving in and out of traffic and driving on the shoulders at 150 kpm while taking selfies.

Again! Really? Can´t imagine why nobody listens to this guy. ????

Imprison everyone for every infraction (except the Hi So of course).  Why not simply confiscate vehicles as punishment.

My wife just went through a 20-hour driving course with a driver education centre. All went well. She got a licence for both car and motorcycle. The only slight problem is: she can’t drive. Honestly, I’ve let her drive my car and she’s virtually clueless. When I asked her about the course she said she only went on the road for 30 minutes. Total scam, and I worry about how many of these people are out on the roads. I feel sorry for her as she thinks she can drive, but it’s just not safe to let her on the roads. She could kill someone.

i spent 12 months learning to drive with my dad......he used to drive big trucks in palestine....and drove the C in C around in a humber.....so a 20 hour driving course is a short time.....after learning wih my dad I then had 6 driving lessons and passed my test first time !!!!

There you go, you spoiled it all, by speaking sense and logic????. I imagine that they will continue with all the other failures that they have introduced for the last 25 years and keep the status quo.

Yet another idiot banging on about road deaths. The laws to prevent deaths are already there.....they just need implementing. Go to any traffic police office and you will see all the police cars parked there, all day. The lazy cops are presumably sitting round drinking coffee and. counting out the tea money instead of enforcing the traffic laws.

This subject is so infuriating.....here with Prawit having been in charge of cops for years now, banging on about it. Sack Prawit and get someone who will make the police do their jobs.

........which will involve setting up tents at the side of the road in the same spots they've been doing for years and with the same inept staff manning them!

Did they once have a law about passengers riding in the bed of the pick up trucks I wonder how that is goingtit

Hmm..maybe the legalization of cannabis wasn't so smart after all. Drugs on top of an already huge problem with driving under the influence of alcohol does not seem like a very serious measure against traffic accidents:crazy:

Felt

If only General Halfwit was proactive himself. If he was then the issue with road accidents would have been proactively dealt with years ago.

It's a case of the populous telling the politicians not to throw stones in glass houses. The politicians and police and military are all equally as lax as each other when it comes to adhering to road rules. No rules = chaos and death, which is exactly what Thai's contribute too on a daily basis.

Make some simple road rules and then find a team that are willing to enforce them. The current road rules are obviously too difficult for the local populous to understand and adhere too. Don't bother asking the RTP to enforce the laws because those oxygen thieves are too busy conducting their corrupt activities and have failed to enforce road rules for years.

It is simple Mr Prawit.

1 Ensure the Police not only know the law but enforce it.

2 Ensure all drivers pass a stringent test

3. Remove all permits of lorries caught breaking the law

4 Fine all drivers accordingly

5 Get the Insurance companies to make ASLL types of insurance invalid following a ban issued``.

Proactive measures:

1 - Stop driving like a dick

err... that's it
