Gprs Internet Via Pc Card

Featured Replies

Hi all. I currently use GPRS via the AXEN GPRS air card in my laptop, and a DTAC sim. If I want to upgrade to EDGE, do I just go out and buy an EDGE capable card, or do I have to change the sim card also?

Thanks in advance.

Just buy a new EDGE-capable card. If EDGE is already available where you live, it'll connect with the "high" speed automatically, if not it'll fall back to 'plain old' GPRS.

No changes to SIM / Subscription are needed for this.

Or, sell your gprs card and buy an EDGE enabled phone for less money than you'll pay for a card. AND get a phone upgrade. I use the Nokia e70 - and also have used the e65. They are GREAT EDGE enabled phones that do a lot more than a card for 8000-10000 baht.

You'll also be able to check your yahoo or google (or any) mail on the phone and reply to email with your nokia e70 or other phone with fully QWERTY keyboard.

You'll also be able to use wireless (WIFI), VOIP, etc, etc. Lots of new things on a phone now. I think the cards are so limiting.

Before you spend any money for EDGE capability, make sure it is available. I have a Nokia N-80 and when in Bangkok or Jomtien The coverage is VERY limited. Ask someone with an EDGE capable phone to see if your area has coverage.

...and it is very shaky. I had the DTAC unlimited GPRS EDGE package for two years but cancelled it because it simply got too unreliable with frequent disconnects, slow transfer speeds etc. It was good in the beginning but I guess they got too many subscribers without adding bandwidth.
