Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health in Nong Khai, on Friday, played down talk of the marijuana bill being defeated in parliament next week after controversial remarks about Democrat Party leader and Ministry of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit.

Spat between deputy prime ministers Anutin Charnvirakul and Jurin Laksanawisit over the issue as tensions mount. The Democrat Party and the opposition are adamant that the programme ushered in by Minister Anutin must be reversed amid claims that the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in some commercial products is not being measured and may be far higher than the legal limit allowed while over 90% of the crop being grown by farmers ends up being sold for recreational use for the same reason. A top government agency has also revealed that the number of young people under 20 now using the drug has doubled since it was decriminalised in June.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Bhumjaithai Party, already at the bottom of opinion polls, are facing a continued backlash from his controversial cannabis legalisation policy with Emergency Room (ER) admissions in relation to marijuana up 566% this year so far. It comes as the Democrat Party in the coalition government is now aligning with the opposition calling for the recreational use of cannabis to be made illegal and the drug to be relisted as an illicit narcotic subject to criminal prosecution by the Royal Thai Police. Minster Anutin, this week, was involved in a spat with his cabinet colleague Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit, the Democrat Party leader after he appeared to make personal remarks about Mr Jurin while addressing the possibility of having discussions with him on the matter.

 

It comes as temperatures have risen again after a public spat in recent days between Minister Anutin and his cabinet colleague and fellow deputy prime minister Jurin Laksanawisit, the leader of the Democrat Party.

Maybe the first thing they should do is to sell it not more openly than cigarettes.

In shops which sell cigarettes they must be hidden until a customer demands them.

With cannabis in it is advertised and sold in the open on the street. I.e. walk through Sukhumvit Soi 11 and there are many cannabis shops on the street - all openly advertising.

 

What could possibly go wrong?

And who ever thought that could be a good idea?

Did anybody think before they allowed this situation?

As Thailand is notoriously bad at gathering statistics, it's hard to find credibility in stats that have been gathered in just a few weeks - my guess is that their political aims have overruled any objectivity or accuracy.

 

Thailand's de-criminalisation of cannabis is so incompetent it can only be compared with Liz Truss's handling of the UK economy - a total mess of unplanned chaos driven purely be dogma.

 

It's a shame as cannabis should be decriminalised on a worldwide scale but...TIT.

It’s really strange that Amsterdam it’s been legal for so many years I can’t even remember and you never hear anything about a hospitalization in the countries of some goofy amount only in Thailand do you hear statistic numbers like this and many states in America is the goal you don’t hear hospitalization is up due to it just doesn’t all add up to me but then again TIT

What is the treatment for cannabis overdose in a hospital. An assorted food platter..

Thailand will be opening up accredited cannabis over dose hospitals, they will take your blood pressure, temp and then give you a tray for the all you can eat buffet.

This report is obviously a load of cobblers, firstly how can youngsters afford to buy weed at the silly prices many places are asking especially at the higher TCP levels. Obviously there should be a legal age limit for people buying this stuff so it is the people selling & not the product that is the problem. Plus Thai people are much more hooked on Ya-Ba as they can purchase for 10Baht per tablet so maybe some false reporting going on.

4bht/gm doesn't seem expensive to me.

My kids get 50bht per school day, they can easily afford cannabis.

 

As for hospital admissions, I'd be more interested in the actual numbers of people admitted with serious problems, doubt there's be 10.

Overdosing on pot? What a bunch of wusses. 566% increase compared to what? When people have an agenda they will doctor anything.

I agree, the statistic of 566% is meaningless without actual trustworthy numbers, which I cannot find anywhere. It could be the difference between 1 & 7. 
 

Overdosing in a country where education about drugs, as well as everything else, is of such poor quality is inevitable until the street smarts and product quality control enables users to determine safe levels of consumption.

 

I still think taking cannabis is safer than crossing the road here, even on a pedestrian crossing.

Maybe they were doing hot knives and missed ( to stoned ) and stabbed themselves in the face with the red hot tip of the knife. 

Emergency admissions for alcohol I get. But for cannabis? 566 percent increase from what? 2? I'm calling BS on this one.

I live in Massachusetts half the year. We have many dispensaries here. If hospitalizations went up 10% because of cannabis use it would be on every news station in Boston. You can buy weed well over 30% THC if you choose to as well.  The 566% stat is sooo over the top and another big lie coming out of Thailand. I know some hospital staff in Bangkok and they said the same thing. Simply not even close to being true.

One has question what are the conditions being treated on admission?

Or is just people presenting for conditions and they happen to be stoned and now admit it?

Are people being admitted for incidents such as falls minor injuries while stoned,?

Been using dope for about 55 years no problems for me or anyone I know with exception of a green out on some really good hash

alcohol - a few beers is one thing - drugs that make serious permanent brain chemistry changes is something else, and all you weed lovers can deny all you like ............ I even had a few myself when younger and it was great, I know a few people who have been kept it up for decades and they are serious basket cases - they don't see it but everyone else does - weed when abused results in serious permanent mental issues
