My Thai wife is currently covered by my private health insurance with high premiums climbing even  higher every year. As my wife is not covered by the Thai social insurance plan I wonder if there are any other - more cost effective - alternatives to obtain a decent medical insurance coverage for her. I am hoping for some farangs sharing their personal experience on this matter with me. Thanks!

If I am not mistaken, even if they have never worked and not been registered by a company under the 30 baht scheme (or whatever it is) Thai’s can get free (relatively) health care at Government Hospitals (at which they are registered at within their province)....

BUT... IF it is specifically private health / medial insurance you are after for your wife...

There are a number of options to reduce premiums etc.

- Local insurance (rather than international).

- In patient only (rather than include of outpatient).

- Deductibles

My Wife and Son are insured with VUMI.

Premium is about 75,000 baht per year

No deductible, in patient treatment only.

Wife is 45, Son is 9.

The issue with Thai insurance is that they can put up their premiums if you have a claim etc..

If not under SS through emyment she is automatically covered under theuniversal (AKA "30 baht" because in some hodpitsls there is a 30 bsht copay).

All Thais gave free health carethrough the govrtnment dystem.

Have to use the govetnmrnt hospital where she is listed on a tabian ban (house registration) though in some localities they will allow registration based on rental contract.
