BANGKOK, (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha opened an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, the 69th facility of its kind in the country, along with the introduction of BMW i7 electric limousines for participants in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Gen Prayut presided over a ceremony to open the EleX by EGAT charging station which was set up in the compound of Government House to promote electric vehicles in the public sector and in general. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), was also present in the event.

On the same occasion, put on display were BMW i7 electric sedans that are the limousines of APEC participants and Mercedes-Benz EQS cars which are the first EV make locally produced. It was priced at about 8 million baht with a capacity of 700-kilometer-long travel per charge.

“We have many promotional measures, especially for operators, and thus investments are increasing in Thailand. There will be all factors for the business including EV assembly and battery production. Today we are determined to develop Thailand into a hub of EV production for ASEAN and the world,” the prime minister said.

Yes it will be booming all very expensive luxury electric cars who only the rich can pay.. The common people who are in 97% of the country can still pollute. It will be a big difference for the hub

I was watching some monkey business in a supermarket car park yesterday where something was being moved between vehicles.... it wasn't hot, nobody was sat in either vehicle, yet both engines were running. I was surprised when I came out of the shop this was still the case... must have plenty of money for fuel or a bad battery!

Thailand, the perpetual nation of 'becoming', never actually 'being.'

I see a huge increase diesel generators to power it. Even Elon Musk stated many years ago if everybody drove electric vehicles you would need to increase grid capacity three fold. That ain't happening in Thailand.

700 kms.  in an EV with the AC blasting, I seriously doubt that.

With the current battery in EVs, it will take another pile of years to get that kind of distance

on a hot day in Thailand or any tropical country. Oh did you know the battery in an EV is also very expensive to

replace?

We hear this same snot adnauseum, when will this hub nonsense ever end.

Thailand is the hub of road carnage and death and that's it, I would love if all of their vehicles became electric, how blissful would that be if like me you live in a poxy city.

No that's why they fit into the equation.  By reducing hours, saving power, they will be able to use the power saved to power the hub of EV's.....makes perfect sense. Just open the shops and so on from 10 am to 6pm, then close so the EV's can be charged and driven the next day.....

Hub?   This is consistent with these leaders that Thailand is the center of the earth.  The hub of all hubs!????

The best step might be if all these vehicles could drive themselves here....

Reminds me of a scene in the TV series “Succession”, in which the mega rich were doing their bit to save the planet by being driven to their private jets in a fleet of Teslas.

They will have to lower the taxes on electric cars tremendously to encourage Thai drivers to give up diesel pickups.

At least you can hear drunken Somchai coming round the bend in a diesel pickup... In an EV you won't.

Hub of hubris.

Ah, so now all becomes clear. They are giving a hollidays to people in Bangkok during the Apec, not because of pollution but because those 8,000,000 baht+ i7's won't last 5 minutes in a trafic jam. Wonder how many they bought?

But much more people with solar cells on the roof, that is positive again.

Thailand sub-contractors to the auto industry... nothing of it's own.

why couldn't Apec leaders be moved around in the back bed of a pick-up?

Or Song Taews?
