Thailand: Russia-Ukraine tensions spill over to APEC

As tensions simmer between Russians and Ukrainians living in Thailand, Bangkok's efforts to appease Moscow and encourage tourism from Russia have failed to win Vladimir Putin's attendance at the APEC summit.

"We go to Phuket every year or two, so why should it be different this year?" asked Yulia, a Russian national arriving in Bangkok. The Thai government reckons that 1 million Russian tourists will have visited the country by the end of the year, but Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, will not be one of them.

He had been expected to arrive in Bangkok yesterday to attend a regional summit but he pulled out last week, citing a busy work schedule. Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in Bangkok on Thursday in his place for this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

  • IMO Putin was never going to attend APEC. The risk of a coup in the Kremlin, or assassination while he is on foreign soil, is just too great. Russians are starting to understand what this war is

  • Like the wold care all that much that a tyrant is virtually mass killing men women and children and burning their homes, just like in the middle ages, nothing change...

  • Didn’t attend for the loss of face and target on his forehead. Wimp!

Russians are starting to understand what this war is really costing Russia.

Nobody wants to be in a photo with a mass murderer or sit at the same table. Even those who do not openly condemn him.

Putin is not alone is his despotic and violent reign but he sure is a clear and starkly obvious POS

No place to run, no place to hide when you're a parasitic mass murderer of Ukranians and international pariah for war crimes committed against innocents in Ukrainia, and shamed and resisted by other countries around the world (unfortunately not Thailand, because 'tourism'!).  Wouldn't want to be revealing a Russian passport in hand when traveling anywhere in the world during these times.  And it's a state of shamefulness no one's going to ever forgive or forget. You are unwelcome!

Before the Ukraine conflict, I found that Russian tourists were, (for the most part) loud, rude, ungrateful, and arrogant - especially the families.

I have noticed recently, however, that probably because of the war in Ukraine, that Russians now appear to be a bit more mannerly, and aware that there are other "peoples" in the world apart from them!  (I am assuming they are Russians because of their accents - they may be Ukrainians for all I know!)

Disagree with Dirk. Prayuth would have gladly shaken Putin's hand.

Money and Power over ethics is the name of the game for Both of them.

  • Popular Post

Prayut can't get a win. China's New President for life refused to shake his hand and Putin doesn't even know who he is. Kissing somebody's a s s obviously doesn't always yield a positive response.

What I am saying is diplomacy is always the solution, but there's no money in diplomacy, is there.

When your neighboring country marching in with hundredthousands of armed soldiers and arresting or killing everybody, who resists, then is time for "diplomacy"???  No, then it is too late for "diplomacy"

So Thailand's leaders are okay with shaking the bloody hands of the despotic heads of government of China and Myanmar but draw the line at Putin...?

Cue the finger of blame pointing at the West for not conceding Ukraine to Putin for the sake of cheap fuel and grain. No doubt what the Thais would have done. Not our country, why fight for it?

Seems to be this summit was a huge fail. There's been nothing the least bit substantive come out of it. Not even solid declarations, position papers. A good many demonstrators got hurt I'm sad to learn. But which democratic county were they reaching out to? Because there were none.

Bangkok lost three workdays for this circle jerk.

Oh I agree. NATO should have called the wretched Putin's bluff a week after he went in.

An off topic deflection post about the Iraq war and the replies have been removed.

A troll post has been removed.

Smart move on his part imo he knows lots and lots of folks would like to put an end to the creator of such murder and misery in the world I’m sure lots of Russians would like a more democratic government as well

Thailands in cuckoo land... he fighting a bloody war not signing papers.

Putin is to scared to show his tail feathers at the conference.

Praut would relish a photo opportunity with Putin

But it's been a bad week for him at APEC..

Putin can't come for fear his plane will mysteriously fall out for the sky and Xi gave him a very public snub.

So there was no talks beforehand, they just walked in ?

APEC......................

Assemblage of

Profligate

Egotistical

Criminals

Better they stay hidden away in their little sinecures and use the exorbitant amount of money spent on lavish dinners , etc. to help the poor people of their countries who have to dive bins to scrape a living.

because of the world climate (not weather) the whole thing should have been called off, but must say a lot of people now get a better pitcher of what is happening, and not the political lies that have been flashing about, now the general should have an idea that it not a good idea to buy subs from China

Seriously, where have you been in February? The moon?

Yes, they just walked in, after several weeks denying the massive troop buildup at the Ukrainian border was for invasion.

I suppose you can call that check-mate then ????

What was happening prior to that, and how many players were at hand, you probably would know. Does Biden's son ring a bell ?

Just asking,would/could he be arrested ??? for war crimes, and sent to The Hague, they is no way he could be arrested in his home country.

I know as of yet they are no proceedings against him. but even so.

Actually sanctions are working very well. Russian economy has continued its sharp decline:

Nine months after beginning its military offensive in Ukraine, Russia has entered a recession as a result of the economic pressure caused by Western sanctions, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

In the third quarter, GDP decreased by four per cent, according to a preliminary estimate by the national statistics office Rosstat.

With two consecutive quarters of declining GDP, which follows one of a similar size in the second quarter, Russia now satisfies the technical criteria for a recession.

So,  warmonger Putin wont come and King Xi wont shake his hand, think that's a pretty fine F,U to the General.
