COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A decorated army veteran who tackled the shooter who killed five in a Colorado Springs gay club said he wanted to protect the close knit community inside the room.

Richard Fierro, 45, was at Club Q celebrating a birthday with his wife, their daughter and her friends when he found himself one of two people who subdued the attacker armed with an AR-15 style rifle and wearing a flak vest.

“I just know I got into mode, and I needed to save my family — and my family was at that time everybody in that room,” he said in a news conference outside his home on Monday.

There were two major heroes at the Colorado Springs shooting on Saturday night, including one veteran who jumped to act, grabbing the shooter and beating him with his own gun. Yet, somehow, it was the hero that was arrested.

He beat the shooter so bloody he was covered.

It does not appear that the Richard M. Fierro was armed.  He used a 2nd gun by the perpetrator to him.

Yes, the gunman primarily used an AR-15. I'd say he emptied the mag and the veteran seized the opportunity to grab a pistol the perp had with him and beat him with it. All good.

Even though this guy had made threats to use explosives, he was able to legally acquire weapons:

Aldrich was arrested in a June 2021 bomb threat incident after the El Paso County Sheriff's Office was alerted that he was in possession of a homemade bomb, law enforcement officers briefed on the investigation told ABC News. He was charged with two counts of felony menacing and three counts of first-degree kidnapping, but no explosives were found in his home, Colorado Springs radio station KRDO reported.
