Daily News spoke to a man they identified as Peter P****r, 74, via an interpreter after a collision on a zebra crossing on Jomtien Sai 2 yesterday morning. They said in their headline that he was British. 

 

Shocking CCTV footage posted to the page of Tanagrit Ployngam showed the "tourist" step out onto a zebra crossing controlled by lights. 

 

WARNING: The VIDEO may be disturbing for some viewers. Discretion is advised.

 

The media said that a white Isuzu D-Max with a cover on the back failed to stop and drove off after the collision without a care offering no help to the victim.

Other vehicles had slowed to a halt.

 

The victim was left sprawled on the tarmac. 

 

The Facebook post said it happened outside a condominium and there was an appeal for information to track down the driver as the plate was indistinct.

 

A member of the public helped him to hospital where he was given 4 stitches to a head wound and xrays for a hip injury. 

 

He was waiting on the results of these xrays and told the media that he would be reporting the matter to the police this morning. 

 

Daily News had a picture captioned with 'Welcome to Thailand', a phrase also in their headline.

Peter was more than lucky there.

Made of stern stuff, that's for sure!

Wow. Didn't even attempt to slow down before the collision.

 

Either playing with his phone or deliberately struck the guy. 

 

I wonder if this will get the same media attention as the pretty Thai female doctor hit by the Ducati in Bangkok? That was a rhetorical question obviously....

If the British (and other) embassy here cared at all about the well-being of their citizens they would be calling the Thai government to account for this, with the message that tourists expect traffic to stop at marked crossings and that they must either be enforced or removed.

I don’t know about other countries, but in the US, minor injuries or not, the police come to you!  We don’t get hit by a car and then have to drag ourselves the effen station. Good grief.

So therefore any person crossing the road has to one hundred percent aware of this and be fully focused on what is going on around them until they reached the relative safety of the other side of the road.

You should never, ever rely upon others for your own safety when crossing the road!!!!!

The problem here is is the increasing number of vehicle owners who spray paint their license plates white, in order to avoid detection by camera's. It's a prolific and obvious problem that nobody seems to care about, some of the abuse is so blatant with owners saying the black paint peeled off, not that the plate was painted white...horse poo..

Are Thai embassies in the UK calling the UK government to account, every time someone runs a red light or a Thai person is injured in a car accident.

A person ran a red light and hit somebody, happens all over the world, usually doesn't warrant, or get, an international diplomatic response.

The black coming off was actually an issue with a batch of plates in the past, but this was years ago and all affected plates "should" have been replaced by now.

I don't know why they bother marking pedestrian crossings on the roads, all it does is lull people into a false sense of security. They should add skull & cross bone warnings signs just to emphasise how dangerous they can be.

Sure they do. My buddy managed to get four lanes of peak hour traffic to stop for us at a zebra crossing in Chinatown a few months back. It was scary as hell and I think at least one motosai popped through, as expected, but all the cars stopped and we got across fine.

To be fair, they are pretty good near Wat Mongkol station......I just make sure that I follow a Chinese person across the road......

There is no mention in the OP that the lights were red. If you are familiar with that particular crossing, the lights are usually not even turned on. I live just around the corner, they are regularly turned off for months at a time.

Not sure where you got your PhD in comparing apples and oranges, but congratulations.

They should prosecute the driver for attempted murder and send him to jail.

If that would happen often enough, then maybe some drivers would have an incentive to stop. Just the fact that maybe they kill somebody seems not to be important enough for some.

Yes I was getting my Forza taxed and tested last week and a chap brought in a Honda Wave and he was getting black paint put on his numbers.  I hope he got a bill for this.

It always seems that someone just speeds up when seeing someone on a zebra crossing.

I would like to see a survey of how many thais actually know the meaning of it.

Indeed, but observing the other pedestrian (crossing from the opposite side) and the other vehicles travelling alongside the pickup it's reasonably easy to conclude that the lights were actually active, and that they had just turned green for pedestrians.

He slowed down at first because he thought he had hit a dog, but when he realized that it was "just" a farang, he concluded that it wasn't necessary to stop.

Yes, you are most likely correct, but the crossing is quiet an odd set up. As I said previously, the lights are turned off a lot of the time, when it is turned on there is no pedestrian call button (press and wait to change), so how/when the lights go red appears to be on some sort of random timer, not in response to pedestrians wanting to cross. 

So a drive up to get the milk, all of a sudden there is a red light where there hasn't been one for 3 months, and there is a red light with no pedestrians anywhere.

Don't be silly....  Road safety in Thailand cannot be compared to road safety in the UK. 

 

IF foreign bodies, embassies and businesses, chambers of commerce etc applied pressurise on the Thai government to face these issues it may cause sufficient lost of face to trigger those in positions of decision making power to care.

The ‘it happens elsewhere’ does not make ‘light jumping acceptable’... and it happens here in Thailand a lot lot more than in nations with effective policing. 

 

 

 

 

You can forget about the  traffic stopping at red lights ( notably Thais ) as they don't give a damn about red lights, traffic law, pedestrian rights etc etc !

There is NIL / Nada/Zero policing and bringing offenders to justice ( the guy in the white pickup will likely blame the brakes !!)   

The new driving license points system will not deter stupid ! 

I have seen someone mown down on 2nd road in Jomtien near the Immigration soi !  Traffic was speeding through there at a minimum 80kh   with not a care in the world for what the pedestrian traffic lights show.

Yesterday I sat at Chaiyapruk crossroads on 2nd road waiting the lights to turn green . A white Fortuner whizzed by going in the lane to turn right but actually went straight on with a red light ! It's on my dashcam !!

Motorbikes just ignore the red lights .

Best advice for tourists /pedestrians - forget about lights/zebra marked crossings -  use the simple rule " look right , look left , look right again and if IF clear , go ahead , cross !!!     ( this is NOT Europe or the West , but the "Wild West" of Thailand !!)

The driver may not have noticed that they hit a pedestrian ???

 

Come on, you really think thats possible... someone would need to be extremely drunk to not to notice they’d hit a pedestrian...  

 

Those who 'Hit-n-run’ really need to face extreme charges...  So much is wrong with the roads here, so few <deleted>’s given by those is positions of decision making power.
