Thai people don't stop at zebra crossings.

So therefore any person crossing the road has to one hundred percent aware of this and be fully focused on what is going on around them until they reached the relative safety of the other side of the road.

You should never, ever rely upon others for your own safety when crossing the road!!!!!

Expats who live here would know that. A short term tourist would not. Where is the sign on any Zebra crossing that says, 'Crossing here is at your own risk'?

Does anyone need to tell them to do so?  Or is it done as part of the normal police response?

If the UK police didn't do anything about it like they do in Thailand, Thai embassies would be "calling the UK government to account".

Why do you presume the police wont do anything, I presume they are actively looking for the pick-up driver and will charge him. What else would you have them do.

Well its not a "major crime" but certainly any car will be pulled over immediaately and the driver fined in most western countries.

Western countries rules of the road especially for pedestrians safety far succeeds Asian countries !

That pedestrian should of looked both ways. It will be interesting to hear the excuse coming from the vehicles driver if and when…….

I don't know why they bother marking pedestrian crossings on the roads, all it does is lull people into a false sense of security.

Zebra crossing, median lines of roads, the police themselves are part of the cargo cult of Thailand where they believe that by mimicking they have have actually implemented. It's black magic by superstitious people and doesn't actually exist as such.

Thank you.

Wow.  Seems its his fault really that he got hit though.  He just strolled right out into the road without even looking.  And he was not even really on the actual zebra crossing!

And the cars had no chance to even slow down!

I am not excusing the car driver driving off though... just to be clear on that.

Finally seen the video

Seems he looked directly at the oncoming speeding vehicle

then (probably a conditioned response) looked away, ignored it and carried on regardless.

Do this with virtual impunity and gilt edged protection in his home country, do it in Thailand and the results are monotonously predictable.

Ordinarily its all a bit ho hum, but the 'will the police pursue it' question will as always be defined in direct proportion to the level of social media shaming it attracts.

Briefly saw video on news … the one noted on article didn’t play. Can’t tell where the limit line is or where lights are situated. No matter what have to be extremely careful and keep an eyes on cars coming towards you… .. hope he recovers and no long term issues….

The driver may not have noticed that they hit a pedestrian ???

Come on, you really think thats possible... someone would need to be extremely drunk to not to notice they’d hit a pedestrian...

Those who 'Hit-n-run’ really need to face extreme charges...  So much is wrong with the roads here, so few <deleted>’s given by those is positions of decision making power.

The black coming off was actually an issue with a batch of plates in the past, but this was years ago and all affected plates "should" have been replaced by now.

I've seen two in the last couple of days. One, I vaguely know the owner. It looks faded to me, not painted over.

OK. assuming they catch the "suspect" which should be easy enough with the video evidence, realistically what will happen to him if he isn't super connected in some way?

Hit and run after running over someone. Come on man!

What would be different if the victim lives or dies?

If the victim dies is there some kind of manslaughter rap possible?

Could be as little as a 2000 baht fine according to the link below:

"According to Sections 78 and 160 of the Land Traffic Act, any drivers who cause damages to another person or another person’s assets and do not stop to provide help will face imprisonment of up to three months, a fine from 2,000 to 10,000 baht or both. If the victim was seriously injured or killed, the penalty will be harder: up to six months in prison and a 5,000 to 20,000 baht fine"

Not sure where you got your PhD in comparing apples and oranges, but congratulations.

What an idioitic original  post, Thai or foreigner the law should protect both equally but a death of a Thai celebrity or VIP gets more attention. Sad but true.

Hmmm….. dont ever use a zebra crossing in Thailand and expect drivers to stop(as in other countries). To the contrary Thai drivers seem to speed up and take aim for you, and this incident may be evidence of this? TIT ?

At crossings with lights - assume nothing  and look once, look twice, look thrice and be prepared for a sudden halt or a sudden run.

I ended up looking every direction automatically living all over Asia with left/right driving lanes mishmash.

They are going to hose Thais with bigger fines soon enough all through automation..the death stats can't go on and the detection tech gets better and cheaper. They will dial on emptying offender wallets next 10 years I guess.

I wonder if this will get the same media attention as the pretty Thai female doctor hit by the Ducati in Bangkok? That was a rhetorical question obviously....

Why rhetorical.. questions and answers are required as to why this is still happening.
