I don't know what they were attempting.

Sounds like they wanted to take over your account, you gave them the 2 factor auth code to reset the password. Good that you quickly went and changed it again and didn't give them the email. That was a close call.

Captor and Myran thanks. Wife has re-registered her online banking and surely that will help. Hidden Apps are a possibility but there is no money in the a/c anyway. I think she'll deal in cash for a while, or put money in and transfer it out immediately. We did ask at an expert computer shop and they would have done factory reset on the phone but they said it wasn't necessary.

On the other hand, why would 'VAT' ring up again if they still had access ??

Elkski thanks - that is what I said to her from the start.

Thanks to all - on it !!

Called ''SIM Swap''. Used to gain access to bank accounts

Not easy to happen in Thailand unless:

1- by phone company employees.

2- unknown app (not from App Store) installed from an email or text message.

3- given personal sensitive information such as passwords to others.

I even void copies by cross lines at any bank and write on the copy were it was used. I never give clean copies signed (not even immigration).
for example I write the bank name and branch in the middle of copy, not on the side.
