January 6 committee releases final report, says Trump should be barred from office

The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection recommends barring former President Donald Trump from holding office again.

The recommendation is among the conclusions of the panel’s final report, a comprehensive overview of the bipartisan panel’s findings on how Trump and his allies sought to overturn the 2020 presidential election, released late Thursday evening.

The 845-page report – based on 1,000-plus interviews, documents collected including emails, texts, phone records and a year and a half of investigation – includes allegations that Trump “oversaw” the legally dubious effort to put forward fake slates of electors in seven states he lost, arguing that the evidence shows he actively worked to “transmit false Electoral College ballots to Congress and the National Archives” despite concerns among his lawyers that doing so could be unlawful.

The committee was right to ask for his tax returns. They have a lot of fixing to do. Nobody anticipated what would happen if a criminal racketeer got to be president.

A report led by the democrats says a republican candidate should be barred from running - go figure !

He was corrupt, a liar, misogynist,  an egotistical maniac as well as a sociopath and not fit for office.

His choices of underlings were driven by nepotism and the USA needs to leave this sorry episode behind.

He was no statesman, a danger to the US and those around him and he was totally a loose cannon.

Get your point, but I am talking about Trump as an individual, not as a Republican or Democrat.

Whichever party he represented, he would have made it all about HIM.

The guy can't help himself.

Should be barred from office. Should have been removed barred the first go-round. Should also be behind bars. :coffee1:

They took painstaking efforts to document FACTS, a thing that 45 supporters are immune to.

Hopefully the GOP will not allow him to run for President.

They're too weak to stop him. They've proved that already.

Far-right extremists who believed they were answering Donald Trump’s call to stop the transfer of presidential power didn’t just join the Jan. 6 mob — they led it.

The first wave of rioters to enter the Capitol during the siege, according to the Jan. 6 select committee’s final report released Thursday night, was disproportionately comprised of members of the Proud Boys, Three Percenters, QAnon fanatics and so-called Groypers loyal to Nick Fuentes, the former president’s racist and antisemitic recent Mar-a-Lago dinner guest.

Among the central findings of the select panel’s report: Trump’s incendiary lies about the 2020 election activated an extraordinary coalition of far-right militants and conspiracy theorists who not only joined the mob but were its vanguard smashing through police lines.

I am a Conservative, but not American. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I don't like Fmr Pres. Trump. But any decision to bar him from this and that (or anyone else for that matter) should be at least bipartisan or in a court of Justice. Otherwise, it is just left against right. It was obvious from the failed impeachment that the Democrats wanted FP Trump out of the way, so to speak, so such a statement by them is hardly surprising.

It will be. The committee has only made a recommendation. Trump will need to be convicted of insurrection to be barred from office. That will occur in a court as you suggest.

Yes, ban him from holding any office in the future.  And, jail time would be nice.

Nothing at all to do with party politics. Trump engaged in unlawful activities, end of.

  • Popular Post

The problem, and it's a huge one, is that if Trump is banned from standing for office again then many of those who support him would take to the streets and start burning down buildings. There can be no doubt about that. So, basically, America is looking at a very bleak future. And that will affect us all, because if America is burning then the dollar will fall into the toilet, and that will impact almost every currency on Earth.

Are you sure? He might have become one of the Democrats' best assets, as he puts off loads of moderate Republicans and independent voters - as it has been demonstrated in the recent elections for congress.

Ah, but he didn't start any wars, did he, so not a threat to world peace, was he!

The only thing I take away from the committee is that they must be terrified of Trump coming back in 2024 to go to such lengths to stop him standing.

I don't want Trump to stand again either, but that's because he would likely just get the Dems re elected to POTUS.

What you are proposing is a undemocratic IMO. Short of being convicted of a crime ( and no guarantee that will happen ), what would you suggest as a way to prevent him from standing again that is constitutional?

A damning report driven by the bias of an effectively partisan (D) committee, which did not fully investigate all of the relevant events of J6. They were totally consumed in trying to damage Trump himself.

Not wanting another Democrat POTUS in '24 I agree. The problem then is that he might stand as an independent and take enough votes to allow the Dems to win again.

  • Popular Post

He should be banned but his toxic legacy will remain. He has validated extreme right politics and party nativism. Trump’s acolytes and his fanatical base will dictate power in congress. Not only he be banned but his acolytes must be voted out of power so that the Republican Party can be released from the hold of Trump .

Cheney probably hates Trump more than the Democrats, IMO. Good to see her gone from Congress.
