Former Top F.B.I. Official in New York Charged in Money Laundering

Featured Replies

A former high-level F.B.I. official has been indicted on charges that he conspired to violate U.S. sanctions on Russia by taking secret payments from a Russian oligarch, Oleg V. Deripaska, in return for investigating a rival oligarch, the authorities said on Monday.

The former official, Charles McGonigal, who had been the special agent in charge of the F.B.I.’s counterintelligence division in New York before he retired in 2018, had supervised and participated in investigations of Russian oligarchs, including Mr. Deripaska, the government said.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Mr. McGonigal, 54, violated U.S. sanctions by agreeing to provide services to Mr. Deripaska, who himself was indicted last year on sanctions charges.

Deripaska's name has come up a lot since the 2016 election (probably not on Fox/RT).  A real-life version of Boris Badenov.

Interesting. McGonigal was the special agent in charge of counterintelligence in the FBI's New York Field Office. The same office that hated Hilary Clinton. The same office that pressured Comey to announce the continued investigation into Hilary's emails 3 weeks before the election. We all know what happened then.

"In December 2018, the Trump administration announced it would lift sanctions from three companies linked to Russian oligarch and longtime Manafort business partner Oleg Deripaska. The sanctions were originally put in place to respond to Russia’s malicious cyber activities and attempts to subvert Western democracies."

Yes and just who could believe this McGonigal was one of the point persons who spearheaded the Russian Collusion hoax and the wiretapping of Trump Campaign staffer Carter Page which in turn allowed for the surviellance and wire tapping of anyone connected to the Trump Campaign.

Gosh who would have thought.

Ol' Mitch McConnell might be a little nervous.  Remember when they were calling him Moscow Mitch?

Are you suggesting that McGonigal alone launched that investigation without approval by the Director?

I didn't think you could read.

A former senior FBI counterintelligence official who spearheaded the Trump-Russia probe was arrested and charged over his own alleged ties to a sanctioned Russian oligarch amid the war in Ukraine.

Right, so he made no decisions, he was just tasked to investigate in conjunction with others, including Strok.

"Putin knew he had lied. And Trump knew that Putin knew — a shared understanding that provided the framework for a potentially coercive relationship between the president of the United States and the leader of one of our greatest adversaries," writes Strzok, who was deputy assistant director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division.

And who is that oligarch? The same one that Manafort sent confidential campaign info to via a Russian agent.

Seems like a handy lad for the Russians to have in their pocket.

Get the spear head to blunt himself, or perhaps give an early nod on where he plans to look.

Seems that Trump had no problems with Deripaska. How surprising

Trump lifts sanctions on firms linked to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska

The Trump administration has lifted sanctions on three companies, including the aluminum giant Rusal, linked to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. Democrats had led a push in Congress to continue the restrictions.

Because the House is going to be able to do what Bill Barr's chosen guy, John Durham, completely failed at? It is to laugh.

It's funny. If I were a right winger and this news came out about the relationship between a senior FBI investigator and Deripaska, I would be dismayed given his connection to the Trump campaign. Yet, apparently, there's something Pavlovian at work here in their nervous systems due to word association that gets them to salivate instead.

I would say that perhaps it is a situation where someone is being held as the sacrificial lamb.  That "might" be dangerous in that McGonigal probably knows things that the FBI would really not want to be known.

If I were the Republican's I would somehow put him in protective custody.  You know many people like McGonigal suddenly find themselves so depressed that the "commit suicide" particularly when the guards fall asleep and the security cameras dont work.

You mean like the fate that befell Jeffrey Epstein when William Barr was Attorney General?

When you want someone to keep silent, you don't send him to court, you do like Trump  give him more money.

Just to be clear, when the New York Times reported that the FBI saw “no link between Trump and Russia” — a week before the 2016 election — the FBI agent who was just arrested over ties to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska was heading up the investigation. Just an absolute scandal.

Maybe if you were a Republicans with a magic wand, you might be able to do that. Otherwise, there's a little thing called the Constitution that doesn't give you that authority.

And keep in mind that it was Deripaska to whom Klimnik, a Russian agent,  passed the campaign documents that he received from Manafort.

FBI agent — or Russian agent? What does Charlie McGonigal know about 2016?

Before he moved on to other positions at FBI headquarters, McGonigal's career had begun in New York, where he worked closely with James Kallstrom — the right-wing ideologue who headed the New York office for decades. A bosom buddy of Giuliani and Trump, Kallstrom is suspected of leading the pressure campaign that induced Comey to reopen the Clinton investigation. The explicit threat of leaks by agents and former agents like Kallstrom, who reportedly hated Clinton, spurred Comey's disastrous decision and his public announcement, which again violated department policy against election interference.

Did Charles McGonigal sabotage the 2016 election?

Two months before Donald Trump was elected, FBI agents reportedly visited Deripaska in New York City and asked him whether the Trump campaign was colluding with Russia.

By this point, campaign manager Paul Manafort had been feeding sensitive campaign and polling data to Deripaska’s associate for months, information that made its way to Russian intelligence.

Did the FBI’s attempts to recruit Deripaska ultimately result in Deripaska recruiting a top FBI agent?
