Masks are designed to prevent infection by droplets arising from coughing and sneezing.

A bacterium is about 1000 - 2000 nm in diameter. COVID is 125 nm.

it is physically impossible to project a bacterium or virus more than a couple of centimetres. It has to be attached to a larger droplet for it to get through the 1-2 metres of personal space most people have, except possibly on public transport in Japan.

To illustrate this concept, let me ask: How far can you throw a cricket ball or baseball, and how far can you throw a pea?

Is that logical enough for you?

Even a child realizes that anything which traps droplets of fluid from a sneeze or cough will reduce the spread of the virus. Did your mother never tell you to put your hand over your mouth when you cough? It was good advice.

Not in my experience. The CSIRO in Australia is in hot water with both sides of the political spectrum, after explaining the cost of compact nuclear reactors is totally uncompetitive with renewables. No-one wanted to hear that.

What do you mean, "The box they come from"? Surgical masks come in many different boxes and packages, and depending on the manufacturer and country of origin, can have many, many different forms of wording on them.

 

Do you have any examples of a box that surgical masks come from, that says they do nothing to prevent the spread of viruses? I've bought a few boxes of masks and I've never seen that written on any of them.

 

I have seen boxes of surgical masks that say they will not protect the wearer from Covid-19 but that's different from saying they do nothing to prevent the spread of viruses from the wearer to others.
