Daily News Thai Caption: Romance Scam

 

The latest Nigerian Romance scammer was arrested in the Bang Lamung area of Pattaya yesterday.

 

He is a Mr Ddubuisi, aged 34. He was taken into custody by sub-ordinates acting on orders of the Thai tourist police chief, Pol Lt-Gen Sukhum Phromayon, reported Daily News.

 

He had used a fake Facebook page and deceiving avatar to win the affection of a Thai woman.

 

She fell for his charms and was promised marriage in Thailand and settling down together in the kingdom.

 

Then the gifts arrived for the engagement.

Just one hitch, the gifts got stuck in customs and the lady needed to pay 300,000 baht for their release.

 

They were of course worth millions. They of course never existed, the lady would have been contacted by a Thai accomplice pretending to be a customs official, notes ASEAN NOW.

 

In this story the victim went to the Bang Saothong police in Samut Prakan who succeeded in getting a warrant for the suspect's arrest that even contained a claim about money laundering as well as conspiracy with other gang members.

There are gullible people everywhere. She might just have been desperate for someone to be with.

Brad Pitt type photo ,pictures of Beverly Hills mansion , Lamborghini car, bundles of cash ,

all downloaded from Google , and she never stopped once to think "Why does he want me" ?

I can remember getting faxes at work from some Nigerian prince back in the early nineties. 

I have a bit of sympathy because in the back blocks of Thailand they have probably never heard of such scams and are barely financially literate despite having some available funds. People are lonely too and hearing nice words can have an exaggerated effect on a lonely Thai lady who has little interest from potential suitors.

Greed and stupidity. Who pays out 300k for the promise of millions from a Nigerian Prince.

The Thai accomplice pretending to be a customs official is the key. Without him the scam doesn't work, as most people would be too cautious to fork over that kind of money to just anyone. People denigrate victims as greedy and gullible, but when you have two people secretly working in concert, it's not that difficult to be deceived. I hope the cops catch the Thai accomplice.

There's falangs getting scammed every day of the week here in Thailand, what's their excuse, just stupidity?

My English ex wife got bent over for £20k then traveled to Scotland to meet him and guess what! laugh I nearly ruptured myself ????  

Thousands of foreigners are scammed out of Billions of Baht by Thai ladies every year.
Where is the sympathy?
This THB 300,000 "scam" (greed from the Thai victim) makes a headline...
I think the Nigerian deserves an award instead... ????

Caveat Emptor. People have been getting scammed forever and a day, can't protect people from their own gullibility.

Poor woman, in all fairness you don't expect Thai's plain Jane to know about those Nigerian scammers and to fall prey to their cruel and heatless games, but it's a way of life for those  Neanderthal Nigerian.

So many people get scammed like this every week. I think there are more stupid people in the world than ever before.

Incredible that nearly every one of the posts above accuse this woman of being stupid and greedy and having been scammed, when exactly the opposite is true. There is no mention of her having paid the money to anyone. It didn't get that far, because she smelled a rat and reported it.

So many people unable to comprehend what they read and just jump to a wrong conclusion. The only thing I would say is that the report should have called her a potential victim, not a victim, but that's Thai reporting for you.
