The Michigan woman who fled to Thailand after allegedly being involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that left a college student dead was given a $1 million bond during a court hearing.

Tubtim "Sue" Howson fatally struck Ben Kable, a Michigan State University student with her 2016 BMW 320i on Jan. 1 at 5:49 a.m., according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Following the incident, Howson got on a plane on Jan. 3 to Bangkok, Thailand. Howson is a U.S. citizen and is originally from Thailand, according to travel records reviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Judge Lisa Anderson handed down a $1 million bond during an arraignment hearing on Friday, saying that she traveled to another continent after the alleged crime, according to FOX 2. Howson is being charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crime resulting in serious impairment or death as well as a federal charge for fleeing the country.

If only she had stayed with the victim at the scene of the accident and called 911..

But she made the fatal mistake of not only fleeing the scene to let the guy die she tried to escape justice by fleeing the country.

Full disclosure ..

I would have stayed at the scene and do my best, if it was me.

..but ..considering that she chose to 'leg it'

Why the <deleted> she went back to face a hefty sentence and the US prison system?

If you leg it, do it all the way.

I could think of a zillion ways a thai woman could 'disappear' here.

Idiocracy.

Btw...I believe she went back on her own accord.

If not ,disregard my post

I believe the max sentence is 5 years, so not that 'hefty'.

She must be Thai - fleeing the scene of an accident. Built into their genes.

The USA has people who do the same.

I did some sleuthing..

"The penalty for leaving the scene of an accident in Michigan is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine or both if serious impairment of body function or death occurs. If the fleeing driver was at-fault, then the fine could be $10,000 and the prison term could be 15 years. (MCL 257.617(2) and (3))"

The above charges don't include the ' 'fleeing overseas' charge which I believe is quite serious

Seem to remember she was reported as Thai when she returned to see the family.

Now she's returning to face the music she's  Michigander.

Not sure if it works the same going the other way. There are few examples of people returning to face justice here.

That lady has nothing to do with this post, so I have no comment regarding her.

I believe she was found by Thai police and extradited back to USA

Facts were in her favour. 5am, 50mph poorly lit road, victim was walking on the carriageway under the influence of alcohol. However, it is reported that his drinking was not a factor. That is where the problem lies, police and prosecutors determined to make matters as worse as possible. Assuming the woman wasn't 'under the influence' too, was driving within the speed limit and with due care and attention plus all her documents in order she should have nothing to fear from a fair investigation and an impartial criminal justice system. And pigs might fly.

This is why I feel maybe she isn't all that bad. This was just a natural reaction to her.

It is for an Asian in a Michigan state prison. It is for her age. It is for the ordinary citizen which is was one until a drunk wondered into her car while it was still dark out and on a busy road.

Look at the pictures accompanying the article; a hag and nice young college boy. Mass media attempting to manipulate your thoughts thru pictures.

It just shows that in both Thailand and the US there are people without morals. Who want to escape the law. So we cant say its a Thai thing to escape justice. Its a human thing to try to wiggle out.

Then we got countries like the Netherlands where someone who drives 205 km/h and has alcohol in his system and kills someone in an accident and is a soccer star seems to get off much lighter then in other countries. They don't even have to escape my country the punishment is too low.

Just so many people who think the law is not important. Its a human thing unfortunately.

Apparently, Thai police located her and advised her to return to USA. She went willingly. Not a good move IMHO given what the Americans have come out with so far.

Reported off topic post removed. This is not about the UK case. Replies also removed

Exactly! The lady ran him down. Not deliberately. Can't turn the clock back. She would have known that she was 'in for it'. If you hold another passport it's the obvious thing to do. Looking at the sentencing guidelines VinnieK has kindly found for us I'm surprised she returned to Michigan voluntarily. It has been known since Victorian times that the severity of the punishment is not a deterrent, it's the certainty of being caught.

I don't think she was extradited. Certainly, some 'reasoning' with her was done.  I have to think at the request of American power brokers.  Thailand extradited a notorious Arms Dealer to the USA and then the USA traded the Arms Dealer for a basketballer. Shows you what America thinks of Thailand assistance in capturing a really bad guy.

She tried - she was captured by Thai police - she waved extradition process at urging of Thai police and returned to USA under police escort is my understanding.

Probably didn't know about that one. But indeed the US exercises a double standard in demanding extradition for one hit and run driver, while refusing to extradite another one.

It is in the genes Is that also the defense which the Red Bull heir can make ?

USA has a long history of trading people for benefit.

End of WWII many notable Germans were given a free green card for their expertise.

That's just for starters.

Still have time to contact the lawyer who is now handling Kaitlin Armstrong (the fugitive who fled to Costa Rica for a, ahem, face lift.) Tubtim looks like she could afford him...

Actually she is Thai by birth (and suspect still a Thai citizen) and fled to Thailand.  How does it have nothing to do with Thailand?

If it was a Naturaized Thai citizen that fled to UK, the Thai newspapers would not call the farang a Bangkok woman.

She is Thai, and just went home.
