Considering this is your first time, why not just email a visa agent and have them pick you up at the airport, process your visa and help you with accommodation.

They only charge 200 baht to get your visa (assuming it's a tourist visa) for you.

Check out Banana Guesthouse. Their rooms are cheap, but adequate for one night. If you want more luxurious accommodation, they'll even help you with that.

The visa agents are great. No hassle and you can enjoy a bit of sight-seeing.

I stayed at the Mingood Hotel on recommendation from another tv member. Not at all fancy but good money saving option, clean, had a visa agent at the hotel so didnt need to look for one, and (what i needed) had wifi in the rooms. http://www.hotelmingood.com/

Taxi from the airport.

Time ,30 minutes to down town.

There are no hotels in "Embassy Row", where the consulate is located.

There is a bus to the consulate area, but easier to use an agent.

Even in the current low season, I understand that Samui has more nightlife than Penang. :o

btw.. when you arrive at the airport head for the taxi booth inside the airport and sort out your taxi there.

Many TV members use N.J Books Centre on Chulia St, Georgetown to obtain a visa - it save a lot of time and taxi fares for minimal cost.

The agent will collect you from the airport if you contact him by phone or e-mail.
