Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra gives an interview at a Tokyo hotel on March 24, 2023. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo

By Chananthorn Kamjan, KYODO NEWS

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Friday he is ready to return and serve his prison term in Thailand provided he is allowed to spend the remainder of his life with his family, regardless of the results of an upcoming general election.

Speaking in an interview with Kyodo News during a trip to Tokyo, Thaksin said he is biding his time before possibly going back this year, following years of living in self-exile abroad. He was ousted in a military coup in 2006 and left Thailand in 2008 to avoid facing time in prison.

"It is not really the price I need to pay but I pay because I want to stay with my grandchildren. I should spend the rest of my life with my children and my grandchildren," the 73-year-old said.

He can afford to build a special jail for him as the lone prisoner with luxury quarters attached for his grandchildren.  Would Yingluck be allowed to visit him?

seeing as both were found guilty in their absence they would be legally entitled to request a new hearing should they return.  The reason they left was the almost certainty that the trial they would have attended had already made it's decision even before the trial had begun. THAT might not be the case should it go to trial again as their is considerable anti-Prayut sentiment within the Kingdom. Many believe Thaksin is the only person who can restore Thailands economy and standing in the world & personally I would agree with them.

Three of a number of conditions for his return:

Choice of five-star hotel penthouse suites

First class make-up artists

Convincing body doubles

Yes of course, allow the military elected clowns continue to govern the country with their amended constitution which provides the military 350 senate seats out of the 500 senate seats.

Keep the people fed on rice, blame Thaksin and his sister for everything, while military elected deputy prime ministers wears 25 high end dead friends watches which he borrowed, and jail all of those under Article 38 for speaking up and protesting in this democracy.

You just can't help ignorance.

Forecast the Chao Praya river freezing and people playing hockey on it about the same time that he actually serves time in a prison.

With the money he misappropriated from the Thai public?

  • Popular Post

He talks and talks and talks a lot.

If he wants to come back, then just come back and go to jail.

Why wait for the election?

And just in case he thinks he can come back and not be jailed and meddle in politics again (even more than now), then maybe he should think about possible bad consequences.

He should rot in the desert. There he has all the time to think how wonderful it would be in Thailand. And he has enough time to think that he could still be PM if he would not have been so greedy.

He's seeking the best quotation for what it will cost him to avoid jail time IF he comes back!

Really?

They didn't have to run away.

They could have shown evidence that they are innocent.

They could have had lawyers who show that they are innocent.

They didn't do any of that. Why should they now get a new trial?

  • Popular Post

How many extra years in prison will he get for running away?

Or should every convicted criminal be allowed to go away for a decade and then come back when he feels like it?

since the year 2000 , a true millenial disaster, it was 1 Shianawatra relieved by a coup relieved by a Shinawatra relieved by a coup ad nauseam, especially nauseam. Ok, so it is time for a Shinawatra again , in or out of jail................here we go 'round the lemon tree, well actually in Thailand it would be the Saa tree?!

Yes, that would be interesting to know.

I think the biggest difference between Thaksin and the others is that Thaksin made it so obvious in your face. He didn't even try to hide his crimes. He did them in broad daylight and thought he would get away with them. And in a way he did get away. He wasn't prosecuted or convicted at that time because nobody dared to do it. That's one reason why the coups happened. If the police and prosecutors and judges don't do anything, what other option is there?

And then let's not forget that most people up country don't pay any income tax. Thaksin stole other peoples' money, not their money. So lots of people didn't care.

If he's Thailand only hope then it's truly doomed.

While I agree the economy was in better shape when he was in power he only gave the nation scraps from his fine dining table.

That sounds about as likely as electing an honest Thai PM.

Fly the WFF out to Dubai or Fk Dominico wherever the hell your holed up ...... hang a few elephant pics on the walls to make them feel at home .....  :burp:I'm sure you can afford it and think of the bonus miles points you'll earn  ...
