126 tonnes of sulfuric acid bound for Myanmar impounded at Laem Chabang port

Suradej Trongsirivibool, the customs chief at Laem Chabang deep-sea port, said that the 126 tonnes of sulfuric, worth 12.6 million baht and which were in transit, have been impounded because the importer could not produce the required documentation concerning the transit of dangerous goods.

 

Jullapong Thaveesri, director-general of the Industrial Works Department, said today (Tuesday) that the dangerous chemical was shipped from India to Myanmar via Thailand.

 

He added that the importer must seek permission from his department for the import of dangerous chemicals, to prevent them from being used as precursors in the production of illegal narcotics.

I used to have a licence to do Hazard goods shipping - Days course and exam at Heathrow, job done.

 

Losing a 12 million baht shipment for the cost of a days course (cheaper probably here) is crazy

It isn't just because of a Hazardous Goods Transport Certificate. Sulfuric Acid falls under Table II of the UN convention that seeks to regulate precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs, in this case, methamphetamine. That plus the fact the it is coming from India (one of the big boys when it comes to producing chemicals for the illicit drugs industry) in that quantity (6 20' containers going by the weight of it) and going to Myanmar are huge red flags.

Plenty of industrial uses. It isn't that it can't have legitimate uses in that quantity.

Yes indeed. Sulphuric Acid is used in the manufacture of Heroin from opium, Cocaine from Coca leaves and in the process to make metamphetamine (ya ba in Thailand)
