USA Stamp Collection - what is the best venue to sell them here?

I have a huge collection with some very rare stamps.  What would you suggest as the best place to post and sell?

As a collector myself, it's very hard to judge the value unless being seen and inspected, some rare stamps can bring good money but then again, they have to be appraised and inspected as to the true value and Thailand is not the country for that, other than setting a price you'd be happy with to let them go and sell them locally or keep them until you'll in Europe or the State to let a proper auction house sell them on your behalf, you can PM me if you want to discuss the matter further, be happy to help.

I had some luck posting individual, rarer stamps on EBay. Gets international exposure. If there are any truly exceptional items an auction house, e.g. Sothebys, is the only way to go.

You will have trouble finding buyers here in Thailand for US stamps or coins for that matter. I saw sellers at Chatuchak market and business did not seem to be booming. The market here is for Thai stamps and coins/paper notes.

Maybe give Stanley Gibbons a try. They are UK based but appear to be open to giving advice / valuations if contacted and have regular auctions.

Right now, and for a while, stamps have fallen of its former glory unless they're exceptionally rare and even than the market is tight, good coins and banknotes seems to be what collectors are after now.

FWIW, I have a serious stamp collector friend in US that buys bulk collections and sells parcels off on EBay. When he mails out the sales, he uses early mint stamps as postage as the market value of those stamps is less than face value.  He acknowledges that what he does is more a hobby than a profitable business venture.

 

I had what I thought was a very decent US collection that probably cost me many hundreds of $ to assemble. He sold it for me on EBay for $23.

 

If you have truly rare stamps, there can be some value in those stamps. The rest of the collection is probably worth little to nothing in US IMHO, even less in TH.

 

Very large spread between buy and sell prices, you would probably receive wholesale price at best.

You can sell them yourself on ebay.  I did this with a large collection of Siamese/early Thai  stamps a few years ago.

 

If you are in Thailand have a look at http://www.eurseree.com

they have quarterly auctions in Bangkok and are reputable

Best to do on an international online platform.
Through Thai dealers you will lose money and stamps are easy and cheap to ship.
I did same with Thai vintage photography, I made more than dealers here would offer, much more.

I have a solid little collection of East Asian banknotes which also includes Colonial pakistan, India and Nepal. When I go to dump these it will be Singapore.

 

I wouldn't even think of bringing over my silver coins and whatnot.

The auction house in Bangkok  I mentioned a few posts ago also deals in coins and banknotes.  If you go to their website you can have a look at their latest catalogue which will  give you an idea of the range of their sales.    I have a hard copy of one of their recent catalogues and there are over 3,000 lots and it's copiously illustrated.

I'm quite happy selling them one by one. I have a large number of plate blocks and first-day cancellations. It's different from your typical collection. I have full sheets and plate blocks.

Are there any online dealers specialising in USstamps?  Try Googling.   I used to use a “Commonwealth Stamp Store” operating out of Spain.  
 

However l suspect your best bet for selling singly or in small selections is eBay.  Particularly if you have plenty of time.  A few years back I used to collect NZ stamps and some bids used to go well above catalogue price.

Amulets.....  many of my Thai friends deal in trading old (and I'm assuming rare) amulets.

Most of the amulets you see for sale are either copies or fakes, ( and good fakes mind you) and only someone who knows amulets very, very well will dare and venture to invest in them.
