On one side of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Saturday, there will be partying - anti-atomic activists will celebrate victory in a battle that has lasted 60 years.

On the other side of the Gate, there will be protests - as demonstrators march against the closure of Germany's three remaining nuclear power stations.

Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwestheim 2 are all due to go offline by midnight. Here at the Brandenburg Gate, where the Wall once divided Cold War Berlin, nuclear energy is an ideological fault-line that splits the country.

  • Only as a result of the lunatic Left activism who have been trying to make nuclear power untenable for 50 years. Nuclear is by far the cheapest, safest, most reliable form of CO2 free power available.

  • My point is that there is an energy crisis happening. Of course 6% is nothing right. Go tell it to the German families next winter. Better yet go yourself. Perhaps you will learn something!

Do you ever actually read the articles linked to. If you had, you would have learned that nuclear power provides 6% of total consumption.

Hence the problem, when the profiteers control your govt.

Only 40ish % from renewables and not developed over the past decades since MMGW/CC was known.

Pretty obvious, fossil fuel industry still control the world's energy production (2020)- wiki

Fine example of minimal progress of electric production.  Not much change:

It's a work in progress, at least a few countries (EU) are trying, and 50+% is from renewables.

No there isn't. Germany has full stock piles of natural gas and LPG and have you see the prices for nat gas lately? If not, they are at long term lows. The fact that Germany can feel comfortable in removing these last power stations bolsters my point.

Maybe you should consider what happened this winter. Perhaps you will learn something.

And by the time next winter comes, Germany will have increased its continue to renewable resources. What's more, it has introduced the strictest program in the EU to mandate efficiency in energy consumption.

This analysis just out. I watch these every day.

But go for bungee jumping, tandem skydiving and selfies on the cliff  (and scoot around in Thailand)

If you were afraid of nuclear plants in Germany best stay in bed.

Of course nuclear power was not a major contributor anymore after the completely erratic U-turn policy of Miss Merkel. She missed a lot.

So now the greens can dance and jump of joy. Will there be a party today?

Germany sleeps well now, only 422-3 = 419 power plants in operation worldwide.

57 under construction though.

The green minister for economy/energy (doctor in philosophy, interpreting French poems) recently said:

Sure Ukraine will continue with nuclear power.

That's OK if they are safe.

Considering that Chernobyl is in Ukraine more hypocrisy is hardly possible.

First off, Merkel moved to shut nuclear power plants because it was a politically popular move in Germany. Second, these plants were nearing the end of their life anyway. Refurbishing to produce nuclear power again would be very costly. Wind and solar provide far cheaper electricity even when the cost of storage is included.

Agree on that.

After she had prolonged life of more nuclear power plants before.

Cost German tax payers xx billion Euro in compensation.

Yeah, no danger at all with the nuclear power stations at Zaphorista and Japan aren't perturbed at all that most of their nuclear power station remain offline while they dump megalitres fo radioactive waste water into the sea. Nuclear power plants are fine.

^ ...and what harm does radioactive water do? I am also quite interested in homeopathic dilution.

Germany wraps up large-scale PV tender with average price of €0.0703/kWh

Germany’s first auction of the year for utility-scale solar concluded with prices ranging from €0.0529 ($0.059)/kWh to €0.0730/kWh. The procurement exercise was significantly oversubscribed.

Remember John Cleese's letter to the local power company where he congratulated them on the excellence of their electricity? Maybe you think that electricity provided by nuclear power is so expensive because it's special? As though it were the champagne of power. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say most people don't feel that way and would rather pay less for their power.

Germans introducing their own version of the Morgenthau Plan, voluntarily deindustrialising their economy... Got to love it.

6 percent of electricity is generated by nuclear power. I don't know what percentage of total Germany GDP belong to the power industry. But it's certainly well under 1 percent. And that doesn't take into account that other, cheaper sources are replacing it and that efficient efforts are now under way.

Germany has very energy-intensive industries. If other countries have 5-6% lower electricity prices, then a good number of companies of those industries (glass, steel, chemical, automobil, etc.) may relocate production to places where it is cheaper...

Nuclear power is the most expensive form of electricity. And energy prices are not the same thing as electricity prices.

Cancer, along with a billion other things that can kill you is invisible. Radiation is readily detectable so stop trolling.

The year is 2023 and you are seriously asking that question? And why do you think my answer would depend on oil, gas, and coal being depleted. If that were the case, it would be way way too late.

Some people dream of being 100% dependent on solar and wind. Yeah, that will work well for Germany and other nordic countries! As did Germany's and Europe's bet on Russian oil and gas... ????
