Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban casts doubt on Ukraine's long-held Nato membership plan

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has cast doubt on Ukraine's long-held aspiration to join Nato.

His intervention came after the bloc's boss, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Friday that "all Nato allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a Nato member".

Mr Stoltenberg has consistently said Kyiv will join Nato in the medium term, once the Russian invasion is over.

But Mr Orban was quick to express his surprise at the latest claim in a one-word tweet on Friday afternoon.

"What?!" the Hungarian prime minister exclaimed, reacting to an article on Mr Stoltenberg's comments.

Nato is a military alliance of 31 countries, mainly in Europe, but also including the US and Canada. Hungary, like all members, can veto new members joining.

Nato members - including Hungary - agreed in 2008 that Ukraine would eventually join the alliance, while denying it immediate membership.

Viktor Orban show himself in the current war against Ukraine as a Putin supporter. He will not join sanctions and now he might stop Ukraine from being a NATO allied. May be best to exclude Orban-Hungary from EU and NATO?

And  Turkey as well

It really doesn't matter much. NATO rules prevent any country at war or with disputed borders from joining NATO anyway. By the time those two conditions are resolved Russia will have lost and neither Orban nor Erdogan will be in power.

File this under "Aww Shucks"

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Thursday the European Commission is blackmailing Hungary by withholding billions in frozen funds over rule-of-law concerns.

There is more money at stake for Budapest and Orbán is still blocking a €50 billion aid package for Kyiv, which leaders are set to discuss early next year.

Turkey out of NATO might not be an ally of the west. That's IMO the only reason they have not done more against israel, which they have no reason to love.

He's a Putin puppet and friend of Trump. The EU will act against him soon. I understand that as a brexiteer you might like that. Actually, everybody would like that come to think it.

One defense strategy might be to strip Hungary of its membership in the European Parliament’s main center-right grouping. That would allow E.U. leaders to reduce the subsidies Hungary receives as a member state. Pretty quickly, Orban would have to choose between upholding respect for E.U. values and losing the benefits that come with being a member of the club.

E.U. values ?

Europeans's opinion doesn't matter, EU decides against the peoples of Europe. Immigration as an example

You posted that way back in April. Do you still think Russia is losing?

Only difference between now and then IMO is the number of dead Ukrainians, and the amount of destruction in Ukraine. Erdogan is still there.

I guess that now the US has diverted the munitions to israel and the GOP are not OK with sending more money that way, things have changed somewhat.

Certainly less posts on this subforum though. I guess it got a bit boring now the orcs are not losing any more.
