Because I can walk into shop, purchase weed and smoke it. The authorities don't care anymore.

I could do that 30 years ago as well, in Soi Pattayaland 1.

Forgot the name now, started with blue. Run by the police

Agreed. But too big of an interest now and embedded.

It won't go away and election is already decided so no problem. Carry on.

No one is disputing that. But it's now legal to smoke weed.

Are you okay?

In my opinion I think yaba/methamphedamines/ice etc should be legalalised. Let's break the banks of the Chinese drug cartels and their big time mates here. Guess that won't happen. Better to demonise dope so those with vested interest in the nasty stuff can increase their fortunes and bring more destruction to society than dope ever would.

Anyone with half a brain knows weed shops were a bad idea, as if there weren't enough junkies in LOS as it is.

Very naive statement to be honest, i dont think anyone who likes a puff is a junkie.

Should we call anyone who likes a drink an alcoholic?

Yes you have to explain to me how smoking recreational pot is legal, because it isn't.

If it's not illegal then it's legal. Why do you think it's illegal?

Because NO law was passed making it legal to smoke pot recreationally.

I DO try to keep up to date with things in Thailand.

Where can you consume it?
Smoking it can be done inside an individual’s residence, and cannabis inside food can be consumed at a licensed restaurant. Smoking marijuana in public places such as schools, temples and shopping malls can lead to a 25,000 baht ($750) fine and a three-month prison sentence. As a rule, Chopaka says, people should be aware of not “encroaching” on other people’s space.

You’ve obviously never been to central Bangkok. Vans or dispensaries have operated outside or very close to Police stations for most of the 11 months it’s been legal. People don’t blatantly smoke it in the street but the cops turn a blind eye if they do so discreetly. But pleased you have found an article on Tourist dot org.

I've no interest and it's my wife's decision. Blimey.

No law is needed to be passed to make something legal. That's not how laws work. Once it was removed from the narcotics list then it was no longer illegal and therefore legal.

It's illegal to smoke in public due to regulations by the ministry of health. That doesn't mean that recreational use is illegal.

Why do you think that the police are closing down pot shops?

Where I live in central Bangkok there are many, many shops openly trading and doing decent business. The cops have closed down literally none in the past nine months. They are are all licensed and display the license and seem to be operating without any issue. I don’t smoke it but as I’m a local I chat with the owners of a couple of these now and then. They are fully approved and pay taxes etc. They have been inspected by a variety of government agencies and continue to be. The government has deemed them legit.

Pretty much. MFP have said they just want to tidy up the law and have backed down from Recriminalising this now. PT have gone very quiet on it. It brings money into Thailand and most Thais, once you leave the old self-righteous krones don’t seem to care. 10 months of this haven’t caused any major problems and the fiscal benefits are obvious.

Edited by Snig27

I don’t see it as a foregone conclusion that it will be re-criminalized. Some pols have jumped on that bandwagon, but I think most are “flexible” until they see which way the wind blows.

So why is it legal to use cannabis for medical purposes but illegal to smoke it in public?

It's legal to use cannabis for any purpose you want (medical or recreational). It's also illegal to smoke in public. I don't really understand your question.

Ask a Shinawatra.....they can predict the future....
