An 11-year-old boy who was shot by an officer after calling police for help has been released from hospital, his family says.

Mississippi police arrived at Aderrien Murry's home on Saturday responding to a domestic disturbance call placed by the boy, then shot him in the chest, according to his mother.

She said the boy asked her "what did I do?" after being shot.

The officer involved has been placed on leave as the shooting is investigated.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting a probe into the incident.

The boy is recovering at home after being released from a local hospital, where he was treated for a collapsed lung, fractured ribs and a lacerated liver.

can only assume that this was a response to a situation that the officer lost control of.

So this is a training issue?

Never go into a situation if you think you will lose control of it.

Stop, step back, pause, re-evaluate, wait for back-up.

Police training has sadly evolved (or devolved) into an attitude of "officer safety first". Anything that helps the cop go home at night is acceptable, and damn the consequences. That plus a hefty dose of paranoia will lead to this kind of situation.  There needs to be far better training and recruiting at all levels of policing, but especially local.

Really? I think it's far more likely the fact that the public now has mobile phones which can record police misconduct and criminal behavior. Body cams also aid in the detection of police misconduct. In this case the fact that the mother was in the midst of a recorded call with the police is also powerful evidence.

Defund the po-po... oh wait... my other son from a different daddy is raising hell... go call 911

Clearly it was his mother who was at fault and the police officer who shot the boy was just an innocent bystander.
