SALT LAKE CITY -- The Good Book is being treated like a bad book in Utah after a parent frustrated by efforts to ban materials from schools convinced a suburban district that some Bible verses were too vulgar or violent for younger children. And the Book of Mormon could be next.

The 72,000-student Davis School District north of Salt Lake City removed the Bible from its elementary and middle schools while keeping it in high schools after a committee reviewed the scripture in response to a parental complaint.

The district has removed other titles, including Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” and John Green’s “Looking for Alaska,” following a 2022 state law requiring districts to include parents in decisions over what constitutes “sensitive material.”

Banning the teaching of history and watching the evening news should follow, as way to violent.   Along with action & war movies, and Buddha forbid, kids watching the nature channel ????

At least this banning is consistent.

By their rules banning the Bible is acceptable but I don’t think the government should not be in the book banning businesses that is the job of the parents this banning of books dumbs down the kids and kills social progress in my humble opinion.not to mention the ugly historical connotations it evokes

Almighty Fail: Utah School District Bans the Bible

In a spectacular self-own for book-banning crusaders, the holy scripture faced a challenge in December when a parent fed up with books being removed from school libraries raised hell via a request to review the Bible as “one of the most sex-ridden books around.”

It comes after a Texas school district was forced to pull the Bible last year under a new book-banning policy introduced by conservative leaders.

“Incest, onanism, bestiality, prostitution, genital mutilation, fellatio, dildos, rape, and even infanticide,” the Utah parent wrote in their request. “You’ll no doubt find that the Bible, under Utah Code Ann. § 76-10-1227, has ‘no serious values for minors’ because it’s pornographic by our new definition.”

So if a librarian tries to get a copy of the Bible or any banned book to a student, they'll be prosecuted? LOL at least that would be the case in Arkansas

The law will subject librarians to criminal charges if they are found to have furnished any item deemed “harmful to minors”.

The plaintiffs argue the new law is illegal because it is a direct attack on free speech guaranteed by the first and 14th amendments to the US constitution.

They call Act 372 a censorship law that seeks to “ban books in libraries and criminalize librarians”.

This is totally getting out of control.  Next up the libraries will only have dust on the shelves.
