BANGKOK (NNT) - The Excise Department has proposed a subsidy of at least 3 billion baht from the new government, in an effort to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The current administration has already approved 2.9 billion baht from the Central Fund for this purpose, offering a subsidy of up to 150,000 baht per unit for EV purchases.

Of the allocated funds, approximately 800 million baht has been utilized, with the agency in the process of granting subsidies - estimated to total around 400 million baht - to buyers of about 3,000 EVs. However, concerns are mounting as the remaining balance of the fund is expected to be depleted by September, raising uncertainties among car dealers and prospective buyers.

Natthakorn Uthensut, an advisor to the Excise Department, has acknowledged the need for adjustments in the conditions for granting EV subsidies, particularly for the first domestically produced EVs scheduled to launch in Thailand in 2024. The move aims to support the local production of EVs and boost the nation’s overall EV industry.

Currently, the majority of EVs in Thailand are imported from China, the largest exporter of such vehicles worldwide. The proposed subsidy extension seeks to incentivize domestic production, encouraging local manufacturers to enter the market and contribute to Thailand’s economic growth.

The program has so far garnered positive responses, with 3,000 EVs having been purchased with the support of the existing subsidy. Car dealers are now urging customers to make advance bookings for EVs due to uncertainty over the extension of the subsidy by the new government.

Eh?

Always the first people to reply to posts are the negative ones with absolutely no knowledge of anything, just needing to get a negative dig in no matter what.

There are already almost 1,500 fully electric buses on the roads in Bangkok, and that should double by the end of the year. We have electric boats on the Chao Phraya and some khlongs.

Thailand is doing more than most other countries in the region. There's a long long way to go yet but they are moving in the right direction. Nut you must feel good after you dig - why not throw in a "third world country" jibe just to drive it home (seeing as so many posters seem to get some weird kick out of doing it repeatedly).

My take from your post is that you are of the minority that have purchased an EV, and now everything else is not acceptable any more.

My take was that he has not purchased an EV at all but is one of those people who will post cynical negative nonsense on any good news story, just because they hate everything. Sticking my neck out there....

It's very difficult once you have owned an EV to go back to a smelly, noisy, sluggish, unresponsive, vibrating ICE vehicle.
