Barriers to transgender people accessing Thailand’s healthcare system

“Trans people avoid and do not have a decent access to healthcare because there is a stigma. They were often discriminated against and verbally violated,” said Kittinun Daramadhaj, a lawyer and the President of the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand talking about factors that hinder transgender people getting healthcare services in Thailand.

 

Several studies have shown that transgender people in Thailand are more likely to face discrimination and barriers in healthcare than their cisgender counterparts. A qualitative report from UNDP suggested that Thai Trans, specifically women, are affected by ingrained prejudice from healthcare staff, which affects their “healthcare-seeking behaviour.” Many more Trans men and Trans women also came forward and shared their experiences of being disrespected and discriminated against in healthcare, including the use of pronouns with which they do not identify, being gossiped about or labelled, being made fun of, being asked questions irrelevant to their health and some people disrespecting their privacy.

 

“There are many issues. For example, on our healthcare card, we do not want to be identified as ‘Miss’. During the history examination, there are also questions like ‘Why would you want to undergo [gender affirming] surgery?’, ‘Have you undergone the surgery yet?’ or ‘Did your parents say anything about it?’ These questions objectify us and invade our privacy,” a Trans man said while sharing his experiences in an interview with BBC Thai.

The biggest barrier is access to general paperwork and insurance. It is time to update the laws on identity and status.

 

The questions may seem intrusive but can also be medically necessary. Trans men still need PAP smears and breast exams, just as trans women still need prostate screening. The reason for the questions should be politely explained though.

OK some nurse calling someone "Mr."....if that is the worst problem we have.....Next week I am going to the dentist.....I am all male but if the dentist want to call me Miss, he/she is free to do so....it doesn't matter.

I personally experienced this as a cisgender gay man in the US so I can imagine such discrimination is magnified for transgender people anywhere.

Yes a common result is avoidance of health care and of course that isn't good.

Such problems I suppose can be addressed by better education for health care professionals and aggressive outreach to impacted communities.

To add its not only LGBTQ people.

Other groups experience similar.

For example obese and old people.

The easy medical response is to blame everything on obesity or age and not even bother to diagnose.and treat complaints.

For example saying come back when you've lost weight which is usually never or of course you have this illness, you're old, just accept it.

Why would cisgender people be even remotely likely to face discrimination??

I was born a man, I live life as a man and I have no problem when other people refer to me as a man.

Mind you with all the woke nutters about I suppose that me being very happy being a man will be a crime soon.

I agree totally with the above!

 

If people of all these confusing letters and numbers want to discus what names to call themselves among themselves  that is fine with me but please DO NOT try and include me in it by ramming the unnecessary names etc around the general and majority male/female population!

 

If someone called me "cisgender" they are likely to get a mouthful as at my age I'm now to old to smack them in the mouth.

I have learned to complete ignore them...they can even call me whatever they want.....They are happy if they can anger us.....Maybe if someone call you cisgender, insist that they address you as Miss. Like the bearded athlete who declared himself woman to show how ridiculous that all is.

How would someone see at healthcare if you are gay or not gay? That is not something that can be seen....

Old....I fully agree

Obese: I do understand that healthcare who want to help people have a problem if their customer damage themself on purpose....Being obese is a lifestyle choice.

"Cisgender" sounds a bit like a disease... What's wrong with the good old 'heterosexual'? (I know it's not 100% the same, but I don't feel comfortable to get labelled with 'weird' words, only because a small minority, who feels they are something else than what they actually are, feels more comfortable thanks to such, relatively new, labels...

For your information some of the terms you use have nothing to do with science terms! Just one example (the one I referred to earlier!)

I didn't say you weren't a man. I don't know you personally. Statistically, you are most likely cisgender. Again, it's not a slur word. You and the likes of Elon Musk can call it a slur word a million times, but that is totally wrong.

Then act like one. Cisgender was never thought of as a slur until Musk brought it up recently. A slur has to be considered a perjorative term expressing contempt like p--f or n-----r. Cisgender is purely a descriptive and does not imply contempt. A real man would never get butthurt by something so trivial.
