Strange Ears Problem

Recommended Posts

Impacted ear-wax can come unstuck all of a sudden and worsen hearing as long as it's not taken out. Ahead of a cleaning by an ear-specialist, the wax can be softened using something from the pharmacy or vegetable oil like olive oil.

I used to be a medic in the military and irrigated many ears over the years, removing impacted ear wax or what we called ear potatoes, 555.  I used to use a hydrogen peroxide/normal saline solution and irrigate with a 20 or 30 cc syringe with a flexible cut off 18g IV catheter tip and had decent success, but after irrigating one patient that didn't know he had a perforated ear drum he started to become sick (turned out he the solution made it's way to his stomach).

Then one day a doc taught me just use the syringe & catheter and warm water, start off with low pressure and gradually increase.  I got so good at it I'd be done in 5 minutes and the look on the peoples faces when they saw what came out of their ears was pure shock.

I stopped reading your post after the remark about you self-cleaning your ears....in the way you describe.

My friend, I have a long personal history of ear trouble.

Very good ear specialist at a hospital in Bangkok told me, after a life-changing session of removing impacted wax, to 'never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.'

How was it impacted? Years of pushing in ear plugs to sleep soundly. Same with cotton buds. ANYTHING being inserted into your ear by yourself WILL only result in an outcome opposite to the one you hoped for: wax impaction.

Sounds like you need to a)  get your ears cleaned by a specialist, and b) never put ANYTHING in your ears again, cotton buds, ear plugs, drops....you name it.

thnx

Any competent ear, nose, throat, doctor can clean your ears, for me he used a small unit that bombarded the wax with warm water, not painful.

I had that done, very nice, it really is amazing the difference it makes, go for it.

I also had my ears cleaned in India, in a park, it is a profession, he showed me a note book to read, one comment by an Irish guy, had written

"the only thing you'll loose is an earful of Sh*t'' he was right :giggle: even a small piece of skin was removed.

Not a Dr, a ENT specialist they will have the vacuum equipment, if you are in Pattaya i can recommend one

I use Hydrogen Peroxide 3% (20 Baht from most pharmacy's) but occasionally I feel the need to use a ENT Specialist. Who do you recommend?

Jeez, that's cheap scuba; I recently paid nearly 2000 baht to have that very same thing done at Bangkok Phuket hospital and it was all over and done with in less than 10 minutes.

I am going to my hearing aid place in a few days I'll get her to have a look and tell me how much wax I have. If it's too much I'll go to Dr Apichai. Many thanks for your help.

I had a constant problem with itching down into the ear and pain when pulling on the earlobe, etc. Pharmacy gave me some anti-fungal drops. Not sure if they worked, as the problem kept re-occurring.

It was from putting my head under water in the condo pool! Fungus or bacteria in the water. Started using the pool with head always above water. No problems since. Some of the pools are not cleaned properly and widely used so be aware.

smell your finger after you get the "wet" feeling. If it stinks then it may be what they call "Swimmers Ear". Had this a few weeks ago and drops from a doctor held in by cotton balls (cut to size) cleared it up in a few days.

As said above, see a doctor.

PS I haven't been swimming in 30+ years so the name sounded strange to me too. :wai:

I HAVE BEEN WEARING HEARING AIDS FOR THE LAST couple of years, this causes both a fungal growth in my ears and the compounded wax problem,  i have learnt to clean my ears with peroxide every three months or so.

the amount of crap that comes out of my ears is incredible.

i thoroughly recommend on getting a doc to teach you how to clean your was with peroxide. it is well worth it.

Philippines, went swimming, after that block of ear. To doctor, who flushed out my ear. Private doctor in mall, 7 $, didnt even bother to claim later.

Incredible what came out. The water expands the ear grease and blocks .

Yeeeh, could hear again.

You have headset on, it gets more moist inside(sweat), causing blocking. Same as with sleeping.

I know you better dont clean your ears too much as it will activate more ear grease to produce.

So im not really over doing as for that.

Cotton tips very carefully, turning and not really pushing.

However they have this now and looks helpfull. You just twist it in your ear. For instance Alieexpress.

Maybe have to buy a bundle, as it looks logically good.

But then i think , why not make a motor in it for auto rotate, wouldnt be that difficult, though?

Ah there goes my change to get rich, in reveiling.

The tip is made like a drill, auto transport grease out while turning.

The proboem with all these types of devices if self-used is that you can end up pushing the wax further in.

Doctors can better visualize the inside of the ear and extract wax than one can by oneself, and it really does nto cost that much.

thanks. yes i will visit a doc soon

as one who is deaf in one ear....go to a doctor...do not let some salon gal clean your ears with candles or ? or attempt to do it yourself with cotton buds....ear docs are cheap and know what they are doing....takes only a few minutes and if you do have deep ear wax plugging they can safely remove...it is not always as simple as u may think as sometimes sand/dirt can lodge in your ear and mix with wax and form a plug that is almost like a rock....why take a chance???  go to a pro....
