Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has, again, delayed his return to Thailand, this time saying he will wait to see how the election of the prime minister turns out.

Thaksin said last month that he would end his 17 years of self-exile this month, because he wants to care for his grandchildren and is ready to serve the 10-year prison term from which he fled.

His youngest daughter, Paetongtarn, said today (Wednesday), however, that she had just spoken to her father and he has changed his mind.

No. No surprise at all. His major moves have always been accompanied by smoke and mirrors. He won't return if there is even the slightest chance of doing jail time.

In other words, nobody replied to his application (in triplicate) for a special waiver of 12 years of jail for a six star convicted billionaire conman.

  • More likely that a future MFP/PTP government is looking less and less likely ...

No.

No surprise at all.

And seems doubtful that anybody would want to be identified as the person who waived his convictions/jail time.

How sad, i'm sure OMF had looked forward to join his birthday party

I would've been MORE surprised had he returned.

Sort of reminds me of the chalerm brother who shot and killed a cop at short range then fled to Malaysia.

Highly corrupt daddy made arrangements for him to return to LOS wih no charges but he didn't want to come because the Thai people weren't showing him enough respect.

Well I didn't see this announcement coming ????????????

Yes.

MrMoJoRisin is crying in a corner of a darkened room somewhere, not in Thailand. He was betting his house on toxic Tony making a return this month.

Up the offer, Tony! ????

He probably wants calm waters before refloating his boat and can see lots of unrest with what the Generals are doing at the moment

I remember back in 2010 (pretty sure it was that year... kinda all blur together), during the red-shirt protest out in Sanaam Luang, in front of Thammasat Uni, where I, unfortunately, needed to be everyday and also lived nearby... passing through checkpoints every day, and later where also dozens of people were killed, I was wandering through and up on this huge screen they had erected, was Thaksin broadcasting a speech to the red-shirts telling them how he would be coming back to fight with them! The people cheered wildly! I was thinking... what a joke, these numbskulls actually believe him! Yep... as you said, the garbage he says is always accompanied by smoke and mirrors, AKA lies and deception. Is it ok to say that about a criminal in exile? Or can even scum like him file suit... probably.... oh well, go ahead, be my guest.

He will get a pardon from the king after the new prime minister is in place.

Well that's the 3rd time I've had to expensively bin the 3 tier welcome home cake and flower garlands I've bought. I can't afford to go on like this ! ????

A Thai with political heritage changing his mind? So uncharacteristic!!!!!

Dodging the possibility of a prison sentence maybe?????

I predicted that Tony wouldn't return this month. As he said, it's wiser to wait until the political situation is clearer.

I was in Bangkok in 2010 when  government troops massacred red shirt protesters, some taking refuge in a temple.

Tony is very conscious of this and the thuggery 4 years later of Suthep and his yellow shirt goons which led to the overthrow of a democratically elected government and Prayut and the generals.

Stay in Dubai for the time being Tony until it's clear what plans the generals have for Pita.

What red shirt massacre was that?

He could be long dead of old age before that happens

But...but

What about your grandchildren?

Just looked up an old post of mine from March 26

"Presumably he will return post-election only if his lot wins so he can return and forgive himself and live happily ever after..... "

It was in response to his interview where he said...

"Now I've served 16 years already in the big jail because they prevent me from staying with my family," Thaksin said, referring to his life away from his home country. "I've suffered enough. If I were to suffer again in the smaller jail, it is OK."

Apparently not "OK" any more..... ????

So, then it will be a lot more selfies from abroad, then.

You were here and still have the distorted view of the events?
