On July 14, Thai authorities detained Mr. Sombat Phannuch, 62, a resident of Phichit Province, who was accused of attempting to assault a 14-year-old girl. Phannuch had allegedly abducted the girl from her home while her father was away, intending to assault her in a nearby forest, reported Daily News.

She managed to escape and alert locals who swiftly came to her aid. After spotting a large group of locals searching for him, Phannuch fled into the nearby woods.

Police officers and hundreds of locals launched a manhunt that lasted all day and night, eventually capturing Phannuch.

The locals' fury at Phannuch's actions led to some injuring him before police could intervene. Upon investigation, officers found a large hole dug by Phannuch, presumably intended to bury the girl had he succeeded in his assault.

Police verified that Phannuch had previously been convicted for comparable crimes and had only been out of incarceration for two years.

The current allegations against him encompass assault and battery.

Should have allowed the locals a bit more time and made use of the hole he had already dug...

Times like this is when one longs for the days of frontier justice. Done and dusted in hours instead of years or decades.

However it doesn't seem to be on the same scale as in Thailand.

The fact is, here you read this kind of news on AN forum and similar, not on the main national news. How many AN-equivalent forums do your read from other countries?

If ASEAN is your main source of info you may suffer from what is known as confirmation bias.

Just saying.

Unfortunately the whole world is rife with this kind of thing on a mind boggling scale.

I lived in Thailand for a long time and was kept upto date with what was going on locally not only by my wife but also thai friends. I've also lived in many countries during my life so far. My observations are thus: Thailand is far more dangerous than most expats realise even at village level.
