Pheu Thai breaking with Move Forward to form its own coalition

The Pheu Thai party announced this afternoon (Wednesday) that it is breaking from the Move Forward party to form its own coalition government and nominate Srettha Thavisin for selection as the prime minister of Thailand.

The announcement came shortly after a failed meeting between core members of Pheu Thai and Move Forward, aimed at resolving the thorny issue of Move Forward’s stand on amendment of the lèse majesté law, which was used as a pretext by many senators and MPs to withhold support for prime ministerial candidates from the Move Forward or Pheu Thai parties.

The meeting started at about 9.30am at the Pheu Thai party head office, during which Pheu Thai core members asked the Move Forward party to backtrack on its policy to amend the lèse majesté law, so that the Pheu Thai party’s prime ministerial candidate can receive support from senators and MPs.

Move Forward’s core members refused to budge on the party’s stand, said the source.

Pheu Thai was represented by party leader Chonlanan Srikaew, deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai and Secretary-general Prasert Chanthararuangthong. Move Forward party was represented by Secretary-general Chaithawat Tulathon, Sirikanya Tansakul and deputy leader Phicharn Chaowapatanawong.

Protesters burn effigies at Pheu Thai HQ as it breaks with Move Forward

main-2023-08-02T173140.678.png

Supporters of the Move Forward party burned effigies at the Pheu Thai party headquarters on Phetchaburi Road this afternoon, in protest against the party’s break from Move Forward.

Initially, supporters from the “United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration” group rallied at the party’s HQ, to urge it stay united with Move Forward and the other coalition partners until the term of the senate expires in mid-May next year, so they can form a government.

When they learned that the Pheu Thai had withdrawn from the coalition, in an effort to try to form a government without the Move Forward party, the mood of the demonstrators changed significantly.

Evidently, the wide array of knowledgeable [not], yet naive, pundits are terribly surprise by these very predictable events.

I posted this on another thread before this one popped up and I have slightly edited it.

PTP have dumped MFP and will form a coalition and I would expect government. They also said (reported elsewhere and cannot be sourced i.e. BP) they would reform and ammend the constitution and this seems to be in relation to the appointed senators and call a new general election. Interesting politics indeed. Let's see what happens. PTP must show their support base they have not betrayed them. MFP will be opposion but if PTP and MFP vote as a block in the house of reps along with the other coalition partners they will have the numbers to change the constitution and bring about a new election. All PTP parlimentarians would have to cross the floor to vote with the opposition MFP.  Talk about political machernations. It's insane and all because of 250 appointed generals by the coup leadership to entrench their power and override any democratic election result that threatens it.

The more I think about this the more intersting it becomes. PTP could actually be like 5th columnists in plain sight and cross the floor and vote against the government i.e. itself and it's military/conservative/royalist coalition or abstain on basically every vote. Is this actually possible?

Thaksin is a wily politician

there’s more in store

Simply kicking MFP out will be political suicide for PT

I give Mr T more credit than that

He’s also going to dish out revenge to the generals. Just you wait and see

And the military will point to this squabbling between elected parties as a reason to remain in power for the good of the country.  They've done it before.  Many times.

PT leadership has no backbone. Betrayal of their constituents. Greedy opportunists.

Don't be fooled. See my previous posts. This might actually be some magnificiant political maneuver to oust the military once and for all. Absolutelty intriguing politics this is on a grand scale. A movie should or will be made about this. Very, very fascinating and I say this as a person educated in polical science.

So PT successfully managed to make Move Forward give up the house speaker role before the PM votes. Then they waited for Pita to fail due to the Senate (PT has influence over enough Senators to raise the question why those didn't vote for Pita) just to form a government completely without Move Forward, with their own guy as PM and all other members having way less seats so PT can dominate.

Combine that with all the shenanigans about Thaksin coming back after his party gets into power.

It really does not paint a good picture of PT. Smells like a nasty plot from the start which abused the hype around Move Forward just to turn their back on them and break their promises to obtain the biggest power.

Significant progress for Thailand.

Next election will be MF v PT

The extreme right has been obliterated.

MF remains the only political entity with a vision focused on something greater than preserving the privileges of its elected representatives and executives.

It is the only way forward.

Those facts are not unnoticed by the People.

Historical tradition.

And yet......only a few can see it.

Rinse and repeat.

The dumbed down are too easy.

The people got rid of the junta puppet government that manipulated the previous election. That’s a win for the people. The new government has to be formed to manage the economy and people’s livelihoods. Any government without the military parties is progress and door slightly ajar for democracy.

In a nutshell.

That would most certainly be progress and a stepping stone towards what might be achievable.

Step by step, slowly slowly catch a monkey. Anything too pacey will hasten he next coup.

Keep the Thaksin mafia out - any heavy involvement will also hasten the next coup.

Short steps towards democracy, I don't think that the Thai population are ready for anything more.

Did you miss the point that Prawit is in the coalition? Last time I checked he runs the main military party

I don't think that Thaksin is being wily, I think that he is just desperate enough to come home that he will destroy the PT party just to achieve his own ends.
