A 10 year old spotted dolphin was found dead, washed ashore on Karon beach yesterday morning,

presumably due to the rough monsoon winds and waves, being weak and too sick to fight the currents. The dolphin’s body was then retrieved by the Karon Municipality team, before reporting to the Marine biologists at Cape Panwa.

Mr. Kongkiat Kittiwannawong, veterinarian and specialist on dolphins, from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre said The dolphin must have died 3 days before his body washed ashore. The research team have taken the body to be dissected and analyzed for further determination on the cause of death.

In the past month five dolphins have died in the Andaman Sea, washed ashore on Phuket and Phang Nga, but there has been immense improvement for one dolphin nicknamed ‘Red’ that was found ill on Kata beach, 11 days ago. Under intensive care of the center, it is showing signs of movement in its tail, and enjoys a normal appetite, but must still use a sling for support to stay afloat.
