Cannabis clash to coalition: Bhumjaithai’s olive branch to Pheu Thai Party PM candidate

The fickle nature of Thai politics once again reared its ugly head when the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party extended an olive branch to the Pheu Thai Party prime ministerial candidate who levied against their cannabis legalisation policy during the General Election campaign.

 

Pheu Thai Party leader Chonlanarn Srikaew yesterday invited Anutin Charvirakul and the Bhumjaithai Party to a press conference to announce they have agreed to form a coalition government and agreed to propose Srettha Thavisin as their PM candidate.

 

Anutin expressed confidence that the parties would successfully form a government with 212 votes from MPs from the two parties, 141 from the Pheu Thai Party and 71 from his party.

Anutin emphasised that the two parties agreed they would not revise the lese majeste law, not be a minority government, and would not include the Move Forward Party (MFP) in their government-aligned parties.

 

According to a report on BBC Thai, the two parties need 163 more votes from senators and MPs from other parties to be able to form a government and they will not court votes from the MFP as it would upset the majority of the Senate.

By the time they sort this mess of an 'election', and the resulting slow-moving self-coup, cannabis will have been legal for nearly two years - I think this Constitutional crisis will last into mid-2024.

 

It already seems 'normal', as does the similarly implemented alcohol liberalization. And there are almost no "the sky is falling" stories about the threats of cannabis.

 

Taking away rights and privileges, which the public has become accustomed to, will be challenging.

 

Much better to focus on the ever worsening methamphetamine problem, which results in ~ 200,000 incarcerations and countless damage to the public health.

The lawsuit can be made again once Anutin is deputy PM. 

Lo and behold. Chonlanarn Srikaew gets a criminal record and has to resign as PM.

If the PT leaves the Cannabis law the way it is they might as well just quit.  

The problem with making promises and saying things is that people foolishly expect you to do it.

the other thing that both of them have to watch out for is how they handle senate reform or replacement of senators.  

 

This is a coalition that is made to make the MFP good

 

The only thing that MFP has to do is sit back and not shoot itself in the foot.

 

This is a good thing for MFP as they really were not ready to take control they can now learn about each positon in cabinet through the shadow cabinet.
