European diplomats ‘terrified’ at prospect of Trump winning in 2024, report says

Trump is neck-and-neck with Biden in early opinion polls

European diplomats are not overlooking the possibility that Donald Trump might secure a second term in the Oval Office if he is re-elected in 2024, and are actively formulating back-up strategies in case this scenario materialises, according to a report.

The prospect of Mr Trump returning to the White House has become an important topic of discussion in private conversations, with some calling it “terrifying”, The New York Times reported.

Steven Everts, a European Union diplomat who is set to become the director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies, told the outlet that his colleagues were relieved at US president Joe Biden’s response to the Ukraine war.

But they are now being “forced to confront the Trump question again”.

“It’s slightly terrifying, it’s fair to say,” he said.

He noted that the US plays an important role in European security, and said that diplomats will now “have to think again about what this means for our own politics, for European defence and for Ukraine itself”.

The discussions around the potential fallout if Mr Trump returns to power are intensifying as the former president is emerging as a strong challenger for the Republican presidential nomination, tying up with his popularity in opinion polls despite a slew of indictments against him.

Fresh polling conducted by the Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that almost two-thirds of Republicans, specifically 63 per cent, are now expressing their desire that the former president run for office again.

The EU is a notoriously left wing (and corrupt) organization, so it is no surprise that they would favour Biden over Trump.

Now I am neither a fan or Biden nor Trump (despite all the Strawmen on here), but if the EU are terrified of Trump, that implies to me that he is doing something right.

Firstly, may I suggest you learn the difference between Europe and the EU.

Secondly, if you read my post and that was your conclusion, may I suggest you read it again, slowly this time...

The thread is about the European diplomats being concerned about the possibility of another trump abomination (administration) as far as the eu you are correct I don’t know much about it but I certainly wouldn’t support a blanket statement saying it’s corrupt kinda looks like one monster of a trading block with a lot of clout kinda like a force multiplier to help stand up to the likes of China

The article refers to ‘European Diplomats’, specifically mentions ‘European Defense’ and ‘Ukraine’.

The article also quotes an EU diplomat.

EU diplomats are ‘European’ but then the EUROPEAN has no defense role and Ukrainian is not the EU.

If European diplomats, EU or otherwise, are not considering the implications of a second Trump term on European Defense and the Ukraine war then they would be failing in their duties.

The only ‘terrified’ quote is actually ‘slightly terrified’.

Nice trigger on EU being corrupt/Leftwing.

The war between Russia and Ukraine is real, no proxy about it.

Although Russia seems not to like referring to it as a war.

This is coming from a person who claimed that the Guardian is a communist publication.

Sadly, very little of what you wrote has 'context, rather brushes with a very, very wide brush.

However, the article:

There is a difference between 'being terrified' and something being 'terrifying'.

You'll probably find that spoon-fed trust fund babies now occupy a high percentage of senior positions within the EU.

There is a similar set in the UK but for the EU you can start with Ursula.

'spoon-fed trust-fund babies' . . . ???? . . . occupying a high percentage etc...  What a load of <deleted>, but you make for entertaining reading.  Please do share with us who these 'high percentage' ate.

Ah, Ursula.  A woman from a wealthy family that goes back centuries but according to you a person who went to the LSE, graduated in Medicine and the went into politics is a 'trust fund baby'.  Perhaps you should look up the term and see how applicable it is.

Ok, the other 'high percentage', thanks. ????

The EU is so "notoriously left wing" that the president of the Commission is a Christian Democrat (v.d. Leyen), the president of the parliament is from a centre-right party (Metsola) and the president of the Council is a Liberal (Michel).

Yet another example of your irrational paranoia when it comes to the EU.

Wealthy, political family - old money - they all have trust funds - married into old German nobility - extra silver spoon for that - LSE one year but did not graduate (a bronze teaspoon for that) - then "silver spooned" a switch to Hannover Medical School to graduate, despite frequent and proven plagiarism within her thesis - table spoon size and probably gold.

Famously failed as German Defence Minister but then magically spooned into the top EU job. We should all learn to play the spoons, methinks.

Olaf thank you for your post unfortunately I feel as an American the trump fiasco is far far worse than our Vietnam war and even the remote possibility of a repeat is really really bad

Well (playing the spoons )I agree when one is blessed with wealth and status it is a true test of character in that regard mr trump has failed miserably the Europeans are rightfully concerned as should everyone look at his track record it speaks for itself.literally 10s of thousands of unessary deaths due to Covid, enabling Putin into thinking his at best (useful idiot) quite possibly worse had weakened nato enough so he could just get away with the extermination of the Ukrainian nation, the additional 25% of our national debt with no gain sir respectfully I could go on and on he is one bad leader and should stick to bilking his tenants in his rentals

You need to look up the term and see how applicable - not - it is in this context.

'Famous' in Brit tabloids - well done.  Also, if her time as Defense Minister wasn't brilliant (and you can surely tell me why without looking it up as you're clearly quite knowledgeable about her career) then why does that preclude her from other jobs?
