Is it okay to walk naked chest in the streets?

It is illegal to drive a car shirtless.   You can walk around without a shirt but the Thai people generally do not like it.  You will be considered "lo-so mak".

It goes against Thai societal norms & not acceptable - but you would probably get a farang "pass".....

You won't be well received or regarded.....Off the scale lo-so....

Bangkok or any other city: not ok

There is a 'breast free zone' w/CCTV for 'security, on our soi, though is restricted to BMI <25

Up until the early 20th century, many Thai women used to go around topless.

 

I wonder why that particular element of "Thainess" is no longer promoted.

Yes, but the question wasn’t asked ‘if it was ok to walk around without a shirt 100 years ago?’

 

As another poster mentioned…  ‘lo-so maak’… particularly in the city. 
also an indication of socio economic disparity… poorer people & foreigners who’d get labelled ‘kee-nok-farang’…. Particularly in towns & cities… 

 

At beach resorts it’s somewhat more relaxed… 

 

But ultimately the answer ‘no… it’s not ok to walk around without a top, particularly for a foreigner’…

It's true about the underwear.

My wife goes mad if I try to go anywhere in the car with no shirt, which might suggest that it could be (another daft) law. I would never drive topless unless just dropping someone off and not getting out of the car.. but alas it didn't happen.

As for walking around topless, on an island or Pattaya, I guess it's ok. In a city, no.. just don't do it.

I was in the dentist the other day and a customer came in for treatment shirtless. Unbelievable rudeness and i was gobsmacked that they treated him like that.

I don't know how people can do it. I'm too insecure about my body to walk around a beach area topless, never mind in a city.

The only time I wear underwear is when I go for my weekly massage, but I would never walk out without a shirt, not even around the village. Although there is one guy who does it routinely, but I've been told he's a bit of a head case.

No. Not on the street. Not here, not anywhere other than on a beach, by a pool or in your own garden. (The same goes for shorts, imho, but judging by the number of unlovely middle-aged farang legs on the streets, even in the hi-so areas of BK, that battle is already lost).

 

Too hot? Wear loose clothes made of lightweight natural fibres.
