Where in the south exactly?

RCT often involves multiple sessions and then you need to return to have crown fitted.

Very close to Malaysia, so not in a foreigner-heavy area. English is not common here.

I am not sure if I trust the local clinics with such an important procedure tbh.

Prince of Songkhla University Hospital in Hat Yai  dental dept would be best facility in that area.

For a front tooth i would say implant.  It will be longer lasting.  For back,  root canal.

I used dentist opposite veg market just after railway line on nernplubwaan pattaya. Young chap with good English and polite. No issues with my implant

Would a private clinic or hospital charge more? In my hometown, I was quoted 12,000 baht for a RCT, with my social security covering none of it.

I am familiar with PSU, but also with its long wait times. If I can get the same treatment at a private clinic in a more comfortable environment, I'd prefer that. Hat Yai is fine btw, not too far for me.

This is example of Bangkok price from large clinic - so was your quote for RCT only or did it include below:

10-14k  RCT molar

5-7k     Dental post (may not be required if tooth in good condition)

9-22k   Crown (depending on quality)

I will have to check that and compare prices. By now it's pretty clear to me that a combination of root canal plus crown is preferable over a dental implant.

There is usually an after hours option where you pay a bit more but avoid the extreme crowds & waits of the public channel. In addition the work will be done by more senior dentists.

12k is pretty good price for RCT. Though exact will depend on numver if sessions needed. And crown, if needed, would be additional to that. Crown prices vary with quality 8f the material.

Private clinic/hospital costs will be a bit more than PSU. More of an issue is quality. I don't know anything about dental clinics in that area.

A root canal will be cheaper. I have several implants, bit if I could save an otherwise solid tooth with root canal I would.

If the tooth is solid, you should not need a crown. If it is broken or significantly decayed, you will need a crown.

where you are likely to be treated by young students about to graduate. Need an experienced dentist to do root canal and/or Implant surgery. MDH can handle hygenist cleaning only .

My mouth  is full of crowns done by students about to graduate (their final assignment). Every dentist I have seen later said they are very good.

No experiences with Mahidol, though

What made it ‘clear’?

Frankly, you don't know what you are talking about. My implants were done by Professor Dr Somjai and by Professor Dr Kiatanand for the bone graft, both in their fifties with decades of experience, also Professor Dr Somsak, and the Root Canal Specialist is also highly capable. These are personal experiences.

How did you manage to be treated by these professors.

AFAIK it is graduating students and junior staff.

Special clinic?

After hours clinic?

You register as a patient at the Dental Hospital on Yothi Rd, BTS Victory Monument, Then you get sent to the clinic on the 2nd floor to see a general Dentist, these are not students. That dentist determines if you just need a filling replaced, or if you need to see a specialist for whom you can then make an appointment, if you know a particular dentist you can request that one, if not then it's determined by who has the earliest opening. I got lucky in being treated by the Head of Department. These guys lecture in the morning and treat in the afternoon, while General Dentistry is available from 9am to 5pm.  BTW, Mahidol has quite a few departments over seven floors:

Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Maxillofacial Surgery, Endodontics, General Dentistry...

Btw, I live in the south, but would be willing to travel to Bangkok for a reputable dentist for a root canal, if the treatment wouldn't necessarily require returning.

Have you visited Prince Of Songkhla Uni Dental Surgery?

I know some guys who went there but it was a little difficult to negotiate, like it's only evenings or something, the hospital reception didn't know too much about the procedure and I gave up. You will find a lot of the local specialists teach there during the day.

Now, im in Khon Kaen, I go to KKU Dental Hospital, and it's awesome. I really regret not pursuing things in Hat Yai.

I have a similar experience as the other poster above, not in Mahidol.

The guys in the 1st year work in X-Ray, then the general clinic in the 2nd and 3rd years (I first attended the general clinic and I the service was excellent, they identified my issues immediately, sent me for x-rays and passed my case up the line)

I attend the Periodontal clinic and its students that have already graduated and their younger assistants. I have been assessed by a professor in the first and was given a choice by her, join the waiting list (I waited 6 months to be assessed and the treatment queue was another year or accept a student under her supervision) - I am really happy with the service and the charges, which are amazingly transparent. This is in KKU.

I've not been there yet for any dental work, but I may choose to do so.

It still takes about three hours each way to travel there, but if it's really good I'd be willing to go for it. After all, I trust a university hospital more than a random clinic in my small town.

That's correct. They have a special clinic where professors do the dental work. I'm in the process of finishing my second implant there, though I have not used the doctors you mentioned. Their queues are long, but that is not a problem for doing implants. Having had both implants and root canals, the implant surgery is a breeze (though stitches are usually required), so a revisit is needed. It a tooth is in a bad way, I would go for an implant, especially if said tooth has already been worked on and is in a bad state.

A simple xray would determine if the tooth is worth trying to save or not. The dentist at Mahidol said my chance on my rear molar was 10% (due to some bone loss as the tooth was cracked and allowed bacteria to get into the pulp). So I went the implant route. Despite some bone loss he said that a graft was not required, and that tooth has been good for a few years (got a removable/adjustable type).

I have been using a superb, excellent English speaking Dr in BKK for over a decade.

She has a clinic that deals with falang's and is a superb dentist both diagnostically and results.

Her work is second to none.

Dr Lily.

I could not recommend her more highly. ????

Soon to attend for the first stage of 2 more implants myself ????

-Have had a very good experience with Dr Lilly too. She drives a Mercedes, so she's doing something right.

Yeah, I was in HY for 15 years and visited a couple of different high street clinics - they were always happy to clean and fill, but when you need some real work done, a lot of places aren't equipped, they ask you to return to see a specialist who visits once a week or fortnight during the evening. I am not too sure about places like Dentalland on Rajindee ( I used to teach the receptionists English) or places like Bangkok hospital. Maybe worth a look if you don't want to bother with Thai uni system.
