Utilities and Broadband question for newbie

Recommended Posts

So we are new to renting in Thailand.

In the UK, when i move into a property - i take a picture of the meter readings, i compare gas and electric companies and sign up a contract with them depending on who has a better deal. Broadband pretty much the same.

How do things work here in Thailand? Do you have a list of companies and rates to compare? Or do you just sign up with anyone? When do you get the bill, do you pay by a direct debit or do you get a bill and then go to pay ?

How do you go about getting broadband ?

Not sure where you are based. I'm in jomtien, my condo sets the utility unit price. Water costs are very low , say 150 baht / month. Electricity for me is about 2000.

For the internet I use a sim based modem and a dtac sim. The modem was about 2000 and I use about 1000 over three months in data.

There will be one power company PEA, billed once a month, you can pay by direct debit, 7/11, if after 7 days you must go to your local REA office. the bill still arrives once a month in a plastic holder on your meter. Condos will vary on charges.

Optic cable connection can be paid in cash monthly or direct debit, if you live in Thailand you need a bank account.

So i can have broadband with an account or not ? At the moment i won't have an account till i get my visa sorted

Yes their are a few internet companies, I use TOT you can pay cash at their office every month, they send a bill, I pay 524.30 every month, I find TOT very good service, any probs and they are normally out in a couple of hours, they even came and moved my router to another room, free. up to eight people can use it.  (or you could use a mobile phone as your hotspot.)
