Seven Thai citizens including a student from Thammasat University have been sentenced to jail, some for more than two years, for taking part in a Bangkok protest against the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021.

 

The Thai Criminal Court on Monday ruled that the defendants violated the Emergency Decree and interfered with the operations of authorities. All seven were sentenced to jail and fined, according to Thai news outlet Prachatai, citing Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR).

 
On the day of the coup, Thais and Myanmar nationals protested the military takeover in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok. The protest was dispersed by Royal Thai Police, who used shields and batons and made arrests.

They should be applauded not jailed

Would love to read the legal decision. Poor kids.

An absolute abomination, and proof that major reform is needed here. When a court sentences young people for protesting against a genocidal regime, there is a level of moral bankruptcy present, that says alot about the outgoing administration. The Thai army is beyond the pale.

Protests??? Democracy?? even for people in another country to support is punishable in Thailand... Thailand the land of smiles. It once was.. Nowadays it is Thailand the land to shut your mouth

Perhaps it is time for the Thai people to hold the judges accountable. Shame them and their entire families for such a treasonous act against the youth. 

That clearly shows the real face of thai government.

Did ANY civilized country do the came when people protested outside the russian embassy upon the invasion of ukraine ??

 

 

Ironic really judged and sentenced by a judiciary that have been unable/unwilling to bring any judgement on a junta that toppled a democratic government.....

I'm surprised that Thailand wasn't invited to the BRICS conference in South Africa, the way things are going here the country would be right at home with the likes of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and new member Ali Khameini.

I wonder why this story is not on any other news channels searches besides  https://www.irrawaddy.com ?

The international community should be appalled by this type of story?

How about prosecuting those that introduced the Emergency decree...

Another blow to freedom of speech.

The PM may have changed but the judges haven't. The right to protest and the right to free speach (the latter isn't exactly the case anymore) are two major underpinnings of democracy. Thailand is in no way a democracy.

It seems only shame, humiliation and a lack of tourism dollars, are the only things that can motivate this heinous government and reveal it's utter lack of humanity and morality.

Yep. Sometimes alternative methods have to be found, when the will of the people is consistently thwarted. Do you not think men of guilt and men without honor, should be subject to blowback? What makes their family immune, when they have been enjoying the perks for ages? 

If they get ill and need to go to the hospital will a helicopter be provided?

Given the stance you have taken against the Junta across the border you should be hanging your heads in shame and the protesters should be applauded, not jailed. 

This is a disgusting outcome and those judges involved should be held accountable for their actions by United Nations! 

I once believed LOS to be a just & humane country but living here for 4 years has given me a different prospective!

Can you explain exactly how a judge's children (or any other member of their family) are benefiting from this? If not, then I suggest you stop. Kids and families are off limits, they always have been amongst those of us who are civilized.

 

We only punish the guilty, not the innocent. Your point would be valid if we were considering a family like Ferdinand Marcos - they were all in on it. In this instance however, judge's families do not gain anything from this morally reprehensible decision.

We can't have people protesting about COUPS can we?

It would appear to be a hub of oppression, suppression of citizen rights, reform resistance, malice on the part of the judiciary, corruption, army over reach, and overly conservative backwards movement.

You are 100% wrong, nothing should be off the table when you're dealing with scum like Thailand's present leadership 

How can that be an offence? What about freedom of speech?

Either the people of this country grow a spine and do something about this, or they just keep bowing to their masters, their choice. I gave up on this place and its people long ago, just need the wife to agree to leave here for good.
