Outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha bade farewell to the Thai people, after about nine years in the office, in his farewell message on Facebook today (Saturday) by expressing his hope that some of his government’s initiatives will be continued by the new administration, to lead Thailand to the “finish line.”

He also thanked the Thai people for their cooperation with his government in overcoming the obstacles and difficult times during the past nine years, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, global conflicts and energy price fluctuations.

He said that the nine years were the most meaningful period of his life, during which he had “dedicated his wisdom and capabilities and coordinated with all sectors of Thai society for the benefit of the country and the people.”

He claimed that, during his time in office, Thailand had developed in several areas, which will put Thailand among the world’s leading countries, thanks to the various projects initiated by his government.

PM Prayut: Does this look like a face that would do a coup?! Admit it: You're going to miss this photo of now former Thailand PM Prayut.

Outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha concluded his nine-year term, taking to Facebook to share his reflections and achievements. He described the tenure as the most significant and memorable of his life. Prayut highlighted Thailand’s considerable progress, attributing its development to nine specific areas.

Under Prayut’s leadership, Thailand initiated an unprecedented 20-year national strategy, directing the country’s trajectory and ensuring the execution of key policies. The government invested heavily in national infrastructure, including land, rail, sea, and air transport, crucial for economic growth. The ultimate goal was to transform Thailand into a hub for aviation, transport, and tourism.

Investments were also made in digital and platform economies, strengthening telecommunications infrastructure, including 5G technology. As a result, Thailand is now transitioning towards becoming a regional hub for 5G, data centres, and cloud services, one of Prayut’s goals. These developments have led to improvements in living standards and income.

Twelve industries have been identified as future industries, with the government’s flagship Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and special economic zones already in operation, fostering more specialised labour skills.

you having laugh, the first thing you did was bin democracy, human rights, free speech and much muct more, far from what you promised when taking the country by military force then refusing to give way, it could take just as long to undo the damage, name one thing you have done that has improved anything, maybe when the books are reviewed you will find yourself and your cronies in court - of course the incoming crowd aren't much better unfortunately

Go on matey, why don't you round it off with one final chorus...

There are several songs from the 1930s that would do!

that would be the happiness thing, right?...

Was really wishing for an MFP government, and the eventual jailing of Prayut and Prawit. Now that would be the best retirement for them both, a nice long stint.

This was not the motive for the coup. The motive was to preserve the rights and privileges of the elites (military, corporate, feudal) which dominate one of the most socially unequal countries on Earth. It was exactly the same motive which has seen the winner of the last General Election cast into opposition.Furthermore all independent opinion recognizes that Prayuth's tenure has been disastrous for Thailand - incompetent and corrupt - and has seen the country slip back economically compared to its Asian neighbours.

Why does he always feel the need to touch kids.

Agreed. Prayuth restored order and preseved Thailand's charming culture by removing the divisive and corrupt Thaksin clan.

There's some truth in what you say.

Had he just got rid of Thaksin and his close supporters and enablers, and then allowed the democratically elected government to carry on working things may have been ok. Thaksin acting as PM with his sister as very poor cover for his actions needed to be stopped as its not allowed under Thai law. Unfortunately Prayut suffers from the same lust for power as Thaksin and others so it didn't work out as it should

I always love when people, and especially farangs, pretend to know why things happened.

Where do you get your insider wisdom from? Or is it just in your imagination?

I know that Prayut wasn't exactly a great PM. But I still like the idea that he removed Thaksin.

Even now we can see how Thaksin divides the people. He wants to be the center of attention. He doesn't care about Thailand or anybody outside of his family. I hope he rots in jail.

Who is Prayuth handing the leadership of Thailand over to?

Wouldn’t be the “divisive and corrupt” Thaksin clan would it?

Kind of makes the entire 9 year effort a worthless waste of time eh?

Au contraire.

No individual, in the history of this nation, has been more responsible for uniting

Thais than Thaksin.

Firstly, during and after his initial administration, it was Thaksin who taught the people the power of their vote and in doing so built a vast, election dominating, united mass movement against the establishment.

Secondly, by now betraying his supporters and democracy, it is Thaksin who has finally united Thais from all walks of life and from all socio-economic backgrounds behind Move Forward.

There will be a Move Forward government after the next election, recent polling clearly indicates where popular support lays - thank you Thaksin.

???????? This must be bizzaro world because since the coup it has been Thailand's  journey into the twilight zone

The fact that their coup constitution with the military appointed 250 BS senators has even now once again sealed Thailand's fate with more of the same & is just adding insult to injury

And then there is Thaksin.

His biggest "achievement" is how he divided the Thai people like nobody before him.

For anybody who posts here I would love to know how long they live in Thailand.

Did you experience Thaksin, his honest mistakes, his constant attitude to be above the law. etc.?

Did you experience the time before Thaksin?

I don't pretend Prayut was a good PM because he wasn't. But in Thailand, like many other countries, the question is often not who is good but is A better than B. And if B is very bad then maybe A is still better - even if he is not good.

And I think the important part is that people actually experienced this time in Thailand. There is a big difference between reading history books or listen to others and experiencing situations yourself.

I gave the soldiers on the streets from both recent coups soft drinks. They helped to get rid of Thaksin and his little sister. The courts should have removed him, but they didn't (see his "honest mistake"). The military did remove him. Good job. Thanks.

You’re obsession with Thaksin is bizarre.

Now that Thaksin is back in charge, you are about to relive your experience of life under Thaksin - perhaps this time around you’ll be able to maintain some rationality and a reasonable level of perspective - probably not though.

Isn’t the lesson here that coups are, in the long run, counterproductive? Coup after coup after coup, and the end result - Thaksin right back where he started.

Now that is a short list ????

No he didn't bid farewell, he was kicked out by the people. He will be remember for his undemocratic legacy and trying to cling on to power with his appointed senators. 9 wasted years of human rights abuses and lost economic opportunities.

Phayut stayed far too long and maybe he did some good in some areas and only time will tell us that, however giving the reins back to Thaksin and his cohorts is unforgivable and a real smack in the mouth for the vast majority of Thai people.

One of the greatest leaders in the world may could learn from him.  Nobel Peace Prize?

It's called local knowledge, long experience, a diverse Thai network, wide reading and respect for expert opinion (and a willingness to challenge one's own prejudice)

You should try it sometime though I appreciate the lazy, half thought out approach is easier when confirmation bias is in play.

Couldn't let that guy near my children...
