Switching from Non-Immigrant OA to Non-Immigrant O on basis of Retirement
I think many of us (who were on type-OA visas) had different circumstances as yourself. Many of us, due to our age, could not get a throw away health insurance as inexpensive as you can get. Further, as you point out, over time, after a number of years of purchasing a throw away health insurance , the amount of money adds up. So for those of us with far superior non-Thai branch provided Health Insurance, (while on Type-OA visas - where such not accepted in Thailand by immigration) we either switched to a extensions based on marriage (as we had a Thai wife) or we simply exited Thai to invalidate our Type-OA visas (and re-enter to obtain a Type-O, per the OP's post). Unfortunately, the Type-OA visa , for Health Insurance proof, does not adopt the approach of the LTR visa, where self health insurance (from large deposits in bank accounts either in or outside of Thailand) can be used in lieu of Health Insurance proof. -

What’s the best area in Thailand for expats to settle for long-term living?
Not so much the distance as the road. A lot of people that lived up that way used Soi Siam and that can be difficult. Friend of mine used to have a house in Soi 11, Soi Siam and it wasn't too bad going there but could be problematic coming back. A lot of traffic wanted to turn right at the railway causing massive tailbacks. We still see some of that at times coming down the road from Siamburi. -

With respect, Mekhong whiskey is not whiskey - it is RUM! So are Hong Tong and Sam Song - also distilled from molasses. I believe Sam Song actually states rum on the label. It (Mekhong) is distilled from molasses (sugar) which makes it rum. LTR Visa is Now available for Long Term Residency
If you do not get an answer from BOI it is an answer in itself. In this case you know that there is currently no guranteed tax exemption of unremitted income in 2025 and forward. There might be a tax exemption also for unremitted income. However BOI did answer the question of remitted income. So it is not a waste of time asking questions. There are a lot of examples in other countries where you get a definite and legally binding answer from the officials concerning future tax treatment. -
