New BKK terminal “test drive” hailed a success

Airports of Thailand says a trial run of the new Satellite 1 (SAT-1) terminal at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport “has been a success”. The AoT is now planning a “soft launch” of the facility for September 28.

 

The airport used 180 “pretend passengers” during the trial, each with luggage, to test the terminal’s systems and facilities, including aircraft handling, baggage handling, passenger transfers, and cargo services. Thai Airways supported the trial by providing its cabin crew and aircraft during the process.

 

According to a report from the National News Bureau of Thailand, AoT is planning a soft opening period from September 28 to October 28. During this period, the terminal will be open to 3 airlines: Thai AirAsia X, Vietjet Air, and Emirates. By December 2023, the terminal is expected to be fully operational, reducing congestion at the airport’s main terminal.

Just to get some of the facts straight, this is not a Terminal, it is a Concourse, increasing the number of contact gates. That is why the photograph shows check-in at the existing Terminal, where Check-In, Immigration and Customs will continue to be housed. There never have been buses used to transport passengers to gates. They have been used to transfer passengers from gates to aircraft which were not on a contact gate. With the additional contact gates on the Satellite Concourse that will reduce.

So if Emirates are going to use this new "concourse", is that going to be further from the Emirates Lounge or closer?

Much further than the existing lounge as you would have to walk back from concourse G, walk half way down the length of concourse D then get the train to concourse S (the new one).

I am assuming Emirates have built a lounge in the new concourse if that's where they will be flying from - I couldn't see them subjecting their premium passengers to such a long walk.

From my experience Immigration is the only congestion????
