Hearing loss and tinnitus

A very good post indeed. When I lived in Udon Thani I used to visit an ear clinic every 6 months to have my ears cleaned out. He used a miniature vacuum device to remove the wax my hearing was fine. I've since moved to Sakon Nakhon and I've tried in vane to find somewhere I can have this done.

Not even the ENT specialist who has a private clinic in town has adequate syringing equipment, so I've had to resort to DIY methods which are not as effective.

Ear wax xas my first hope, but doctor said there was hardly any. Would have been first price...

I think this should be your last resort - If your hearing medical issue is complicated, how about learning sign language?  My native language is British Sign Language (BSL). To grasp the basic knowledge of it needs about at least 10 lessons (each hourly). If interesting, please PM me.

I think (and hope) that is yet far away, but as you say, perhaps a last resort. Don't really want to think about that now...

I have hearing loss from the military and old age.

I am getting tested at BNH.  I found the doctors there are fairly good with it.

There really is nothing they can do for me.  I find that there are times it bothers me and times that it is not there.

If you are having trouble sleeping or relaxing there are machines that can help.  the other thing that can help is white noise.

For hearing loss there are different aids.

When you make an appointment I would suggest that you ask for an appointment with an audiologist with tinnitus knowledge.

Thanks, well I think eventually a hearing aid will be required, but so far I am living OK with the problem. Even the tinnitus isn't "on" all the time, and it doesn't stop me from sleeping well.

My biggest concern is not now, but the possible continued loss of hearing going forward.

To my knowledge there is no proven way to reverse the problem – other than getting used to it and ignore the high frequency tinnitus, and learn to pay more attention to what is spoken  – I also suffers from it from many years in pro audio business.

There are a number of alternative treatments that you can find searching the Internet, probably they won't harm anything, so might be worth a try, if you find one that seems usable.

Today there are very discreet – almost invisible – hearing aids available, if that becomes the solution.

Yes, you're unfortunately and probably right. My biggest problem isn't today, it is the fear of continued rapid hearing loss. But I will do all I possibly can to at least slow it down or stop it, if not outright reverse it. Perhaps a stem cell injection?

Very very sorry to hear about this tonight is not something I would wish on anyone as far as I know there is no cure I have tried 20-30 different things everything except hypnotism by tinnitus specialist at which is only three in the United States.

Many years ago I developed a serious ear infection and after treating it with massive doses of antibiotics I ended up with tinnitus which has never gone away. It's been almost ten years now. Within the first year of getting tinnitus I couldn't sleep anymore because  the sound was too loud. I ended up consulting with a neuro and a shrink and they told me I had a year to live, that if I didn't start sleeping well my organs would start failing!

So, I chose the pills over death. Ever since then I've taken rivotril, started with .5 mg of now I take 1 MG. a day. I sleep fantastic every night and wake up every morning refreshed. I don't care that I'm addicted, I have a life again, so go for it, it'll change your life.

Be careful, as many antibiotics are ototoxic. I would not wish my condition on anyone. Except perhaps Hun Sen, Than Shwe, Putin, a popular politician in the US, and Xi.

It has never gone away, and it's very very loud. So the only way I can sleep at this stage is to take sleeping pills.

I've been taking them for over 10 years, I do sleep rather well, and I take a fairly minimal dose of Rovitril, which is non generic version of Clonazepam. I do recommend them for somebody with a significant sleep disorder.

I hear cannabis oil can work for some. In my case I think my condition is too severe for that to be effective. We make our choices in life. I chose to get some sleep.

Thanks, sorry to hear that, but you're coping at least. Thankfully I don't have any problems sleeping, and the tinnitus, even if quite load at times, does not bother me too much. And in normal conversation and life in general the hearing loss is manageable without any aids.

I totally hear you on anti biotics, I avoid as much as I can. But I also would be very careful with sleeping pills, and luckily (so far) I don't need them.

There are numerous available, this image of invisible hearing aid is from a Norwegian manufacturer quickly found by search...

Worth also to look at Danish Oticon and Widex, and there is also a Swiss manufacturer.

I am actually Norwegian, so that was interesting! Another thing to add to my list! My wife also works with a Dane that used to work for a Danish hearing aid company, I will meet him later as well.

I am sure that your doctor already checked this, but I had tinnitus and hearing loss in both ears and when I finally saw a doctor, he stuck the world's tiniest vacuum cleaner into my ears and sucked out an amazing amount of solidified ear wax!  My hearing instantly went back to 100% and the tinnitus stopped as well.

Yes, first thing I asked her to do. Did the suction, but she said not much there. Would have been first price!

Well for me it was a choice between sleeping pills or death, since I was only getting one hour of sleep per night, with the severity of my tinnitus and lack of sleep, my organs were degenerating, according to the doctors and sleeping pills were pretty easy choice over death.

Yeah in that case even I would make the same choice. I am really glad it works for you, and even after so long.

Dear MeaMaximaCulpa, I practice good health by being proactive rather than reacting to problems, which confirms our ability to create our own results in life.

But you have to know how to do it.

Remember how effective the covid scare was when scientists masquerading as godlike beings locked down the world due to an invisible contgious fear?  And the profoundly negative consequences that ensued.

I do the opposite.

I contact the omnipotenent all powerful being and request he bless my food, water, body and soul with divine healing power and the tidal wave of positive affects kicks in.

He told me about living water too.  Doctors call it plasma ultrafiltrate or stem cell therapy.  We call it urine.  I put a few drops in each ear daily as part of my normal routine and activate the power to maximize the healing by saying a prayer such as "Please return my hearing to normal."

The Bible is a veritable treasure chest of mental health knowledge that leads to physical health by default.  Google whatever pops in your head.

I hope you find relief.

Yeah, I hear you.  The one thing that I have found is that I found a good hospital to deal with and continue with them so that they can track my hearing and give me advice when I go back in for testing.

BNH has served me well so I continue with them for important medical stuff.

I am sure BNH is a good hospital, but I am only in BKK about one week every month, and BNH is quite out of the way. So I will start with Sheryl's doctor recommendation at BRR hospital.

So I hope we both find what we're looking for!

Something to add to this is that sudden sensori-neural hearing loss (SSNHL) is often MISdiagnosed by regular physicians.  They often misdiagnose it as a middle ear infection, and write a prescription for anti-biotics to treat it;.  Since most SSNHL is virally-induced, anti-biotics have no beneficial effects on it, and the window for the steroid treatment gets missed. Make sure you use different professional audiological services in order to get right diagnose and treatment.

Thanks, I will add this to my list of questions

I believe a large number of Thai adults have a hearing loss problem due to their well known love of noise, thumping bass etc. Very often I have to repeat myself two or three times when someone is in my way when saying "excuse me" in Thai. So why are there so many Opticians around and not Hearing Aid shops like there is in the UK?
