Phuket , Pattaya should be in Wiki , defined as tourist and expat rip offs.

Definition:  Phuket, Pattaya are slangs used to describe tourist or expat rip off's.

As in, I was Phuket'ed last night.

why only safeguard tourists during the peak season? are tourists fair game for criminals outside peak season?

would it be too much to ask for tourists to be safeguarded against crime all the time?

Would it be asking too much  for Thais to be safeguarded against crime all the time also?

I suppose the most difficult question to ask is would it be too much to ask for the police to do their job 24/7, which is after all what they are paid to do.

Phuket has launched the Phuket Crime Free scheme, an initiative aimed at safeguarding international tourists during the peak season.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Monday, bringing together both governmental and private sector entities. Among those involved are the provincial administration, provincial police, tourism police, immigration office, and provincial land department office.

Private sector representatives include the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, Phuket Tourist Association, Phuket Real Estate Association, and the southern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association.

Superintendent of Phuket Immigration Police, Thanet Sukchai, highlighted the pressing need for such a scheme, stating that the high season typically sees the arrival of more than 200,000 visitors every month, reported Bangkok Post. A surge of such magnitude raises concerns around crime rates and illicit activities, particularly drug-related offences.

"The primary focus of the Phuket Crime Free scheme is to secure accommodations for tourists, including hotels, guesthouses, condominiums, and rental houses. The initiative aims to develop a comprehensive database of these establishments and their guests to ensure a crime and narcotics-free environment, thereby prioritising tourist safety."

So, the main strategy of this MoU , signed by govt and private entities to prevent crime against tourists, is to build more data bases about tourists, their accommodations and drug habits. The presumption being that they themselves are responsible for all crime against tourists.

We all know that the place is rife with corruption at every level. The main reason why people come to Thailand is the fact that the laws of the land can be skirted around. Unlicensed? No problem a little on the spot fine "Tea Money" and you are on your way. Drinking and driving. Same deal. Clubs with girls. Illegal in Thailand, yet a good 90% of male tourists are off the plane and into the closest bar. Not for the atmosphere either. Yet the very reason why most are here is the most complained about. I being Australian from the most policed place in the world apart from America. I find the way Thailand works is fine you can actually live in peace and apart from the small fines every so often it works. Yes Thailand is a bit edegy but that is the beauty of the place. If you understand the system. Work within the status quo there really is little to complain about imho. Also if you cannot cope and need your life micromanaged there are a number of alternatives.
