Biden ‘not sure he’d be running’ in 2024 if Trump wasn’t: ‘We cannot let him win’

President spoke about risks Trump poses to democracy at event amid fears a second term would be far more autocratic

The US president, Joe Biden, said on Tuesday that he is not sure he would be seeking re-election in next year’s election if he were not likely facing Republican Donald Trump.

“If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running,” Biden said at a fundraising event for his 2024 campaign outside Boston. “We cannot let him win.”

The remarks came towards the end of his remarks as Biden spoke about the risks former President Trump poses to democracy, amid fears a second Trump term would be far more autocratic than the first.

Biden also talked about Trump’s renewed calls to get rid of the Affordable Care Act and how America is “the only nation built on an idea”.

In the past, Biden has spoken about how it was Trump’s remarks after the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 that there were “fine people on both sides” that inspired him to challenge Trump in 2020.

“In that moment, I knew the threat to this nation was unlike any I had ever seen in my lifetime,” Biden said in a 2019 video announcing his run for president.

Last month senior Democrats sounded the alarm after an opinion poll showed Biden trailing the Republican frontrunner Trump in five out of six battleground states exactly a year before the presidential election.

Biden turned 81 earlier this month while Trump is 77, and polls show voters have concerns that both are too old to run again for the White House.

So why just pick the ones that make Trump look good. Maybe this link will give a better comparison, that somethings are better and some worse. Nothing like cherry picking to meet your agenda.

I thought it was very legibile. Calibri is quite easy to read. Would you prefer Times Roman?

I'm gonna have to go ahead and agree with you here.

The debate between Newsom and DeSantis last week, for better or worse, was at least moderatly substantive. And the participants were at least energetic and sentient.

The higher-ups of BOTH parties should make an agreement that the two grumpy old men will not get their nominations. Then run an actual primary campaign on both sides. The country would only benefit.

Yeah, if only those stupid voters would wake up and understand how grateful they should be   /s

The most basic and simple question voters think about is this: "Are you better off now than when the President took office"  And the answer is clear.

Gas was $2.50 under Trump, $3.50 under Biden.

Inflation sub 2% under Trump, 8% under Biden.

Mortgage sub 3% under Trump, over 7% under Biden.

Now you can argue those numbers all day, but they are visceral and dominate voters' minds.

I picked the ones that people care about the most.  No agenda here, I would prefer if Trump did not run for president at all.

All the way with RFK as an independent.

Both Biden and Trump are yesterday's news wrapping today's fish heads.

Yet another Trump fan, who denies it. Many on this forum seem to lack conviction.

Bye, pointless posting faces, when you do not want to read them.

It's high time the US adds an option of none of the above to the ballots. If that option wins, all candidates are disqualified and we have another election with new candidates in 60 days. What you all think about that?

I like what Joe has accomplished, but he's WAY too long in the tooth. His paraphrased words: "I'm a one-term president to make sure you-know-who doesn't win the election."

Joe's hubris has a strong chance of destroying democracy as we know it in the US. We ALL know what a dumpster fire the likely Republican candidate is. IF you buy into polls, ANY unknown Democrat candidate handily beats dumpster fire by a sizeable number of votes, while Joe is virtually neck-and-neck, sometimes in the lead, sometimes NOT.

It absolutely SUCKS thinking "THIS is the best both parties can come up with?" I'm tired of having to hold my nose when making this choice. Again.

"President spoke about risks Trump poses to democracy at event amid fears a second term would be far more autocratic"   Marxist rule.  Blame the other side for what you have done, will do, or have done.  Any risk that Trump could cause has already been done by the Obama/Biden administrations.  When did Trump break or not follow Constitutional Law?  The Supreme Court said Biden did not have authority to forgive Student Loans.  So what does he do?  He gives the Supreme Court the middle finger and forgive another few hundred thousand Student loans.  Look at the open border.  How many illegal Executive Orders had Biden signed?  And we are supposed to be afraid of Trump?

And Trump isn't "deluded"?

At least Biden knows who won the 2020 US election.

Trump thought that he (Trump) beat Obama in 2016. Jeez.

Yes Trump is also deluded on some issues. They are both unsatisfactory candidates IMO - as I have said many times.

Time for some new blood.

However, despite your strawman I maintain my original statement that the main reason Trump has a very good chance to win is because the woeful Joe Biden is the opposition. I believe the Democrats will come to regret supporting such an incompetent and dishonest candidate. In the likely event they lose, they will blame the "stupid MAGA rednecks" instead of admitting their own role in the loss.

Did the Mexican government pay for the wall as Trump promised did he trample over women’s rights to decide what’s best for their own body jump is a con man. He’s the worst thing that would ever happen if he gets reelected again TIT.

Are you referring to Obama's attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election? His attempt to force Joe Biden to unconstitutionally overturn the election results will live forever in infamy.

As the Zen Master said, “we’ll see” (tip of the hat to the movie, “Charlie Wilson’s War”. I welcome this showdown. I want to know if I have a country which I can believe in and defend (defend the ideals, certainly not always the actions).
