In a move to transform the nation‘s fortune, the Public Relations Department has unveiled a game-changing report highlighting the government‘s efforts to boost the economy over the last 90 days.

The report, released with much fanfare yesterday, December 18, boasts an array of initiatives aimed at cutting costs, boosting income, and ushering in a new era of prosperity.

Chai Watcharong, the spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, hailed the report as a beacon of transparency, providing the public with a deep dive into the government’s bold strategies for expense reduction and income increase, reported The Nation.

Expense Reduction:

1. Energy and Transportation

Slashing electricity prices to 3.99 baht per unit
Cutting diesel prices by 2.50 baht per litre
Revamping petrol prices
Trimming excise tax on fuel by 1 baht per litre
Holding the line on the retail price of 15-kilogramme LPG cooking gas
Slicing train fares on the Purple and Red lines to a flat 20 baht

2. Financial Aid and Debt Solutions

Greenlighting financial aid of 1,000 baht per rai for 4.68 million farming households
Subsidising 120 baht per tonne for sugarcane to discourage burning farm waste
Prioritising Debt Solutions for Informal Debts nationally
Offering debt relief for farmers with debts under 300,000 baht
Launching a single ID card for free treatment under universal healthcare in four pilot provinces

Income Generation:

1. Tourism Boost

Welcoming tourists with free visas from China, Kazakhstan, India, Taiwan (30 days), and Russia (90 days)

Trying to entice tourists from Kazakhstan shows how far the country has fallen. Hardly a mass market.

  • Oh yes, Thailand, favor one country with a free 90 day visa. Russia is at war, and yet you want to favor that country? The rest of the world will remember your policy.

'Nuff said.

Pathetic.

Income Generation amounts to generating more tourism.

Somebody will have to pay for all hs?   Any ideas who hat might be.

I notice in the attached article the 10k baht digital wallet scheme is mentioned - along with 24/7 operation of Chiang Mai airport..............(which apparently started on Nov 1)

two years of closing the country to destroy the economy I doubt it can be fixed in 90 days. Thais seem obsessed with 90 days. Is it a lucky number by chance

Dreaming once again they will fail miserably there is no way can they achieve this in 90 days yet more verbal diarrhoea

Government politicians are nuts TIT

All about government intervention to change prices on this, that and the next thing.

Does the Government actually produce all these things? What do the producers (ie capitalists at all levels of the economy) think? Or are we actually in a command economy à la soviétique?

3 things that so far haven't changed.

Nothing is mentioned about reducing corruption of course because Thailand is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. The Land Department of Thailand is the most corrupt agency in Thailand. All you hear the government talk about is tying to encourage tourism not about trying to encourage other countries to invest in business in Thailand. That is because other countries know how corrupt Thailand is and avoid it.

Roughly half of the 10,000 condos bought by foreigners this year were in "Chonburi" (read, Pattaya).

How do we think those flat owners spend their time? Morality aside, more Chinese and Kazakhs coming through for playtime means a big bump in income for Pattaya. China is suddenly rich and the Kazakhs who hold passports  often have significant wealth from the oil business.

Foreigners that live more modestly, but are fleeing war/oppression in their home country, are ripe targets for the brown envelope game, or worse.

Unless they are sophisticated enough to hide their funds in third country bank accounts.

Do we think draft-fleeing Boris has that level of game? Probably not.

Thats ridiculous. Which SouthEast Asian country has more foreign auto production than Thailand? The Kingdom exports vehicles in addition to meeting domestic demand.

Revamping petrol prices

While I'm all in favour of slashing electricity prices and cutting diesel prices, what does this mean? A large increase in the cost of petrol to pay for the other two?

Revolutionary ideals?

We could use a good dose of that......but certainly not from the elitist classes.

Reforms.

Indeed.

The 'Nations Fortune' is already in the hands of the Six big families who control everything in Thailand.     A 'New Era of Prosperity' will not apply to the Ordinary Folk scratching a living while bowing at the feet of those they are brainwashed to believe are 'above them' !

There seems to be no change in the first 100 days. Lots of overseas trips though.

In summary... massive populist give-a-ways, and praying for more tourist arrivals. LOL. What the economy needs is more than just a shallow 90-day plan rehashing old ideas. It needs an entire rethink, with massive investment in infrastructure and education to attract and develop high-value, high-growth industries.

An inspired and original economic strategy that would have John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman drooling in appreciation and green with envy. Chapeau!
